I found the following information in a discussion on Roundup very useful for myself
and for other gardeners in this forum: Your Weed Killer Might Kill You - NationofChange (http://www.nationofchange.org/2015/09/26/your-weed-killer-might-kill-you/)

Organic gets higher yields:
404 - NaturalNews.com (http://www.naturalnews.com/033)...
| Worldwatch Institute (http://www.worldwatch.org/node)...
Looking at 77 studies from the temperate areas and tropics, the Michigan team
found that greater use of nitrogen-fixing crops in the world's major agricultural
regions could result in 58 million metric tons more nitrogen than the amount of
synthetic nitrogen currently used every year.
Rodale Wellness (http://www.rodalewellness.com/)...
http://www.organicproducermag....
Actually long term organic produce more than pesticides or GMO.
Union of concerned scientists:
"This record, compiled over the 13-year period
since transgenic crops were first commercialized in
the United States, compares unfavorably with the
historical and current trends of major-crop yield
enhancements that have been achieved by other
means."

I tossed out my Roundup quite a while ago. I now use just plain old vinegar on
these weeds and it works just was well.

I must try the latter! Now I have to find some weeds in my yard. :ha:

Yes this is true... and we can use neem oil or leave extract that is saffer and very effective.

You have to be very careful with "natural methods". Salt is usually fine on gravel/concrete/asphalt surfaces as long as it doesn't seep into surrounding grass/landscaped areas. Vinegar can also be harsh especially if you locate that more than 5% stuff. Heck, when gas was cheap, people burned whole fields; I guess some places they still do. If I weren't scared of handling a blow torch, that's what I'd use. (Yes, I'd have a hose ready to go and only go weedburning when there was no drought.) You can target culprits and mess with them pretty good. Until I have more courage, I'll use chemical weedkillers carefully and thoughtfully followed up with handweeding.

Having moved to where the soil is very sandy pulling the new stuff is very easy; weeds in place for over six months are fairly tough with longer roots so may need a serious dose again which costs money so I try to treat then pull early and pull often. BTW, I don't claim to be organic; I do admit to being both lazy and cheap which can present quite a conundrum. Pulling weeds doesn't fit lazy but does satisfy cheap especially since I compost my bounty and will soon get good dirt for free or a few hours of sweating bullets. Manual weed control, once you get the monsters under control, works. I bought a used hoe and steel rake for my project...

And the TTIP will give them, Bayer, Merck and Nestle as well as Big Banks, Big
Finance and other large corporations the power to sue national governments if they
do not dance to their tune. It is nip and tuck, that this evil treaty will be ratified.
It is not only bad for the US and Europe, but for the whole world. Please add your
voice against this heinous plot, whenever you get a chance.

Hi Kat,

I have tried 'that vinegar thing' yesterday and today some of the weeds showed
already signs of succumbing.

I am not really worried about any adverse environmental impact, because our soil
and ground water are highly alkaline and a bit of acid might only improve it. :)

I do a lot of cleaning with vinegar; it's taken years of nicotine off the walls in my new house. (It ate up my sprayer--not good.) I haven't had great success with it as a weedkiller and, even though I was paid to put down gallons of it when I worked as a landscaper, I have always considered chemicals a last resort option for my property.

For large areas I love using a large sheet of clear plastic to solarize the soil and cook the weeds. That it's a one time expense and takes little time to apply satisfies my cheap and lazy goals. Bonus? Baked weeds make great dirt. If I could find used newspapers or cardboard in quantity, I'd put them down and cover them with compost. (Compost I can get; paper I cannot.) I've tried black plastic: what a mess the next year! And I've watched people put down used carpet. Maybe those 2 rugs buried in my yard (perhaps more than 2--I'm still exploring) were supposed to suppress weeds? Do not ever do that...just don't.

Beware of anti-science conspiracy sites like naturalnews.com If vinegar can kill weeds it is by definition an herbicide. Many things are carcinogenic, including french fries or anything grilled. Alcohol is. Many things are known carcinogens without any labeling to alert one to that fact. Get info from scientific journals rather than youtube videos and conspiracy sites and you'll be much more informed.

i am free to make my own determinations
based on evidence presented by either side
i have decided GMO's are unnecessary

industry propaganda would have us believe that the only way to feed
the world is through the use of GMO's and a growing list of chemicals which they are resistant to

how did we get to where we are now without them

check out failure to yield

not to downplay youre comment at all regarding the nature of vinegar

the overstanding of understanding
current scientific consensus is just that... the current consensus of scientists. that "gospel truth" i am going to call it.. changes as new discoveries are made and a new version of "THE TRUTH"
is rolled out and we are to follow that one now...

and yes you can do experiments... cause and effect.. you can discover things through scientific methods... yes

the conspiracy site happened to be hosting the full version of genetic roulette .. i wanted to link the full version as it has the most info
there are many shorter versions for people less interested...

Institute for responsible technology and GMwatch are good sources of the other side of the story in my opinion... and they do link to studies..
also someone with a lot of money can pay people to do a thousand studies until some favourable results pop up and then publish those.

not to throw all of science under the bus.. but yeah....

respectfully,
jeff

getting away from the industrial food supply and having food security are what brought me to this site
information from youre posts and the posts of many other people on here have greatly benefited my gardening and knowledge of bananas.

thank you.. and thank you all forum members
