View Full Version : Will I get a flower next year - Basjoo / Dwarf Orinoco?

Hi everyone
I have a dwarf orinoco and a few basjoo plants that have been growing all summer from 1 foot pups in May. They have now reached just more than 5 feet of Pstem but growth is slowing since temperatures are starting to drop.
I was curious if anyone thinks that I might be able to see a flower from these plants after next year's growing season.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Erik

You can only expect any flower on your basjoo, if you can keep it growing, albeit slowly
during the winter months in a heated, lighted indoor environment. All other forms of
winterizing will set your plant too far back to allow enough time for the blooming
process to evolve.

Hi Olaf
Thanks for the reply. I was hoping that I might see a flower if I built a fancy outdoor shelter like yours.
The best I can do is protect some stalk outside or store it bare root indoors. I guess that I am out of luck.

I got an orinoco to flower by storing bare root in basement over the winter here in CT! That's it in my avatar pic.

Hi Paul
Congratulations! That is amazing!
How tall was your pstem at the start of summer?

This might not work for everybody.....but I do know it works in many zones from sandy soil to poor soil.
You will almost never get a flower from a basjoo grown outside in an unprotected area in our zone 4-7.
But there is hope for the ole reliable Orinoco in a container..seems to be on a two year cycle for a flower for me.
Massive. 1 hand /three fingers at 12 grams.
Maybe much longer for your VC.
