I have an 8 foot Thai black and still no pups. I planned to leave it in the ground this winter because I am seeing reports of it even surviving down to zone 6 with heavy protection, but I would have preferred to have had a backup pup and these are getting hard to get online, everybody is always sold out. Are these Thai Blacks not very good at pupping? Seems a little strange to be so tall with no pups yet.
I have what I've been told are a Dwarf Namwah and a Rajapuri which I received as pups in 8/13; they have never left FL but did spend over a year in 2 gallon pots with lackadaisical watering. They've been in the ground for 4 months, are now about 5' tall and leafing regularly; I can't get my hands around the base of their p-stems and I don't have little girly hands. Result? 1 pup finally on the Rajapuri. And then there's the baby DC I purchased a month or so ago that had a pup; p stem has since rotted off and left 5 babes in the pot.
I don't know how "fertile" Thai blacks are but I do know your only choices are to whack down (stress) mama or figure out how to store her for winter and be patient.

Thats what I am thinking, cutting down for winter will cause it to pup, but I better put something like a thick clay flowerpot over it stuffed with leaves, and then leaves over that to make sure it doesnt croak lol. I thought about digging it but, but I am not absolutely certain Thai Black responds to this well for long periods of time. I had it bare root for about a month last winter and went ahead and planted it in a pot.

I purchased 8 Thai Black two years or so ago, and they've been odd as far as banana plants go.
Only one has flowered, 4 have pupped (one pup each) and there's little rhyme or reason that I can determine.
I'd post photos, but it's raining right now and I don't have any recent pics. I'm certain I've seen photos of TBs /w multiple pups, but it hasn't been my own personal experience.

I DO NOT grow Thai black. I know someone who has LOTS of Thai Black. They live able 500ft from my house. I have never asked him a price, but if you really need more Thia Black let me know. I will contact him and see if they would be willing to sell corms. I have not even seen them bloom, but I do know there are lots of pups on his property. These plants have been in place for about 4 years now.

I've been growing my Black Thai in a large container, having to cut it back every year to bring it in the house. When I got the corm, it was about 7 ft. tall before it was sent, and it has gotten to about 7ft. every summer for the the last two years since I got it.
I finally got my first put from it about two weeks ago and it is about 9 inches tall right now. The mother plant is already close to 8 ft. tall and will soon have to be cut back to get it back in the house. But at least I have a pup if it is too much being cut back again.

I will try overwintering this one outdoors, but if it kicks the bucket, thats good to know, thanks for the info.
