Hey Everyone! I just found this site and I am excited to get a chance to learn about bananas!! I have seen banana trees grow in Redding all of my life, but I have NEVER seen any that bear fruit. I have had a variety of banana trees over the years with only some success at wintering them through our often freezing winters. This year my 2yr old banana produced a flower and now real, honest to goodness BANANAS! I don't think anything has excited me so much. I don't know what variety the banana is, but John Real's webebananas.com suggested you might be able to help me identify it. It has produced three pups so far this year (one I transplanted and the dog killed). I don't know how to proceed from here to determine when the bananas are ripe or how long I can leave them on the tree (not allowing for too much cold). So I will be reading and learning and looking forward to making bananas grow in Redding once more. Did I mention I keep dreaming of banana splits? LOL

Welcome to the org. Diane.
So to identify your banana plant we need pictures, pictures, pictures. Pictures of flower, fruit, leaves, and maybe a picture of one of the pups might help. There are many experienced banana growers here waiting patiently for pictures to help with the id of your plant.

We do need pics. Or an invitation! Lol!

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I uploaded four photos twice when I was here last... as well as a profile photo, but are not showing up even though the site said it was successful. I left a message for the administrator asking what I may have done wrong. I will keep trying to get some photos uploaded. My son is in town from Colorado for a few days for a memorial service of a close family friend. It may be a bit before I can grab some time to figure it out. Catch y'all soon!

Another thank you to those that continue to welcome me. Sadly, I am not having much success with the site. I have spent quite some time now on working to post my location on the map, and to post photos of my bananas. I have sent two replies to the moderator, and although they show as Sent, I have not heard back with suggestions regarding possible glitches between my computer and the site. Even trying to move the original Welcome to Bananas letter into the Mark as Read file meets with no success. I guess I will just have to read and gleen whatever I can from the sites. Having surfed and searched, I am pretty sure my banana is an Orinoco, and I should fertilize my plant to help the fruit ripen while it is still warm here. UGH! We will be over 100 all week with Friday hitting 108. Geez, I am ready for fall...
