Having some interesting issues with musa basjoo the last few years. I keep having problems with them dying in the center and then they will eventually send up pups. Then the pups grow very fast for a few weeks to a month and then they die from the center too. I'm scratching my head at this one as it's been happening for three summers now. Here's the kicker -- it only happens in this one area in my beds. Elsewhere I planted a few trial ones this summer and they seem to be doing great. So what the heck is assaulting my basjoo in this one area??? And whatever it is, it's not lethal to all bananas. I had orinoco mixed in with the basjoo last year and they were unaffected.

Well, let's get on with the pics.

Closeup of my affected basjoo. Anyone ever see this before??

As you get away they clearly get healthier.

Looking the other way -- also healthier.

Another example of a stellar basjoo. By the house and growing like gangbusters. No signs of whatever is killing the other ones in the center.

Ideas?? Anyone ever have this happen to them?

How deep are they buried?

How deep are they buried?

Varies. I've tried all different depths. Ground level, few inches deeper and 12 inches deeper. They suffer the same eventual fate... but only in that area.

Like I said other bananas have done just fine -- no ill effects. It's like something is out to get the basjoo. I've Googled for hours and can't find a similar circumstance. I mean these things are succumbing when it's 80 degrees outside. Perfect growing weather.

It seems that that spot is where most of your water in the yard will drain. Could you be drowning it?
