We just got our first Musa Cavendish. So excited to learn here. one of the plant's new growth was rotten. What are the chances of survival?
Since we have a lot of trees on our property we have plenty of shade for them to grow under. We can't wait to get some more species!
We do have chicken's & duck's. . They absolutely love bananas. . Spoiled brats.
My favorite sentence is " I have a free plant for you "
Hey, you figured out how to start a thread. Now post pictures of your ailing plant.

bananas don't produce very well in shade, and when and if they do in shade it will be poor quality fruit. The more sun the better it is for the plant and fruit. And the chance of survival is pretty good, they are very hardy plants.
and they heal and are much more resistant to disease when grown in full sun.>>>>>>>>and a picture, is worth a thousand words.........ty

It can depend on how big they are, if its a tiny TC (Tissue culture) plant, it might not make it due to not having enough stored reserves, but if its larger and the center of the stem has died. There is a good chance it will pup to replace it. Its worth planting anyway to give it a chance, as long as the corm does not look completely squishy, or hollow if the stem dies down, unless you ordered it though the mail and want a refund. I have had banana plants die down and look dead for months, only to sprout later like a Canna rhizome. Not familiar with your area in Arizona, but I have read some places there like Phoenix are hot and they might need a little afternoon shade, like on the east side of a house, but like Kubali says, it needs as much sun as possible to flower, and bear fruit. Only some wild species like Itinerans (My Musa Itinerans, and Yunnanensis like shade) do better in shady under story conditions. With too much shade, it will probably look a little less ragged, but grow will be slower, but you will have to just use them for ornamental purposes.

So how much sun? I have some very tall trees on my property; grass grows very well beneath them--FL grass and weeds. Right now I have my bananas where they get full sun about 4 hours a day and only "brightness" otherwise; they're thriving. Can I not grow them under the canopy of 30' to 40' feet tall trees? If I planted them in my only truly full sun area they'd be toast I believe. Am I wrong?
It's one thing to love banana pudding but the real question is; did you eat yer meat?

My edible Bananas survive without leaf burn up into the hundred degree range, I think it was 103F the other day and no issues, or course in places like Florida, the angle of the sun is going to be a bit higher, and stronger. Basjoo burns for me at that temp if not careful, and to me seems like an in between sun and shade plant, or dappled sun. The other wild species seem to do best with shade, but all my potted plants have to be slowly adapted to the sun at first in spring, or they burn. I think light shade all day is considered acceptable if grown for the appearance of the leaves, and not the fruit. In sun they can look a little tired after awhile, but they survive here.

Ignore the sugar cane lol, but this pic was taken on a day above 100F and everything is in full sun all day, the Tall Orinoco in the background have fruit on one of them, and the leaves dont burn at all. They dont look that tall, but the canna beside them is Omega, and its approaching ten feet, the other cannas are about 6+, and on the right is a shorter Thai Black (Unfortunately with the stem hidden, have to move it next year) and out of the wild bananas, it does the best in full sun for me with no burn. Ensete is to the far right, and the older leaves are getting a little pale, but its taking the heat very well here, even though I have heard they dont like it mixed with humidity, which is about 98 percent here lately in full sun. I would next year try one in full sun to see how it does, well depending on what you are growing.

At 9:45 PM Weather.com says it's 81 (feels like 88) with 78% humidity and a breeze of 5.69 MPH. During the day it's blistering in full sun. My scrub pines are very tall and more like telephone poles with Bozo hair on top; they don't shade much. Too much for fruit? Guess I'll see because I am not cutting them down; besides the cost of shedding them (which actually isn't bad) they give me a teensy bit of afternoon shade from a very hot setting sun.

Of course on the plant container it said grows well indoors, meaning to me that it does OK in shade. Not from what you guy's say, & you know better than a label. Since I'm a newbie I will keep it in a pot until spring and slowly move it out until I find the right spot for it. It will get some sun, but mostly mud afternoon son. Praying that the other one will survive. I will look up that website for here.. thanks so very much. .

If shade is all you got, I wouldn't cut down a tree to grow them lol, especially as hot as it gets.

The easiest way to post an image on the phone is to use a site like Postimage.org - free image hosting / image upload (http://postimage.org). Choose the image from the phone by clicking browse and then click upload it. Then when done copy the box that says direct link. Click the image icon box in the message field on this forum. Paste the entire link in the field. Make sure the http:// that was there is deleted. (It is simply an example of what the link should start with). When done, click OK. It should show a code. Do not delete this, it will appear as the image. http://s9.postimg.org/9vbzielin/IMG_20150810_161631.jpg
