Oh, dear, welcome to the obsession. I bought a DC 2 years ago; I had to leave her when I moved. Now that I have my own piece of land, I have 9 varieties and am on the search for more.

Growing bananas in your yard is like eating potato chips - you cannot have just one. ;)

At least you are n the right zone. I'm in zone 6 and producing fruit is a 2 to 3 year ordeal but I enjoy it. It turns into a neighborhood party when the bunch ripens lol! It's so funny how so many people find it interesting how bananas fruit. Bananas aren't to hard to grow and are very rewarding .

I hope that little plant grows well for you. I also hope that it is only the start of a great collection. With your grow zone, you can grow many of the plants out there. Probably all of them!

Thank's! Well that's a big hope to me... but i still don't belive it. The winters are a bit long here, from November to March. The min temp is not so low, -3C is the lowest. Never snows. But it's a lot of time with temp 12C to 10C during the day and 6C to 3C at night. It's a tuff thing, that's why i want to make them to pass winter inside my home... :bananas_b

I have mine in pots this year and will be moving them into the garage for the winter. Next year I will plant the taller plants in the ground, then when winter comes, dig up and place them in the garage,or under the house. I am hoping for some pups before I start to experiment with overwintering.

They don't get too bad/stressed for be digged up?

When it gets cold out, they stop growing anyway. So you dig them up and put them away so they don't freeze. If you you store them where it's to warm they will try to grow again. So if you store them right, cool not cold, dark, they will store for months. Then when the weather warms you plant them back out. That is pretty much the nutshell version. I still have a lot to learn.

Ok, but with big plants you can't...

The header in my garage is 7 feet. If the plant, pot, and a set of wheels under the pot is more than 7 feet, I will need to dig them up. I have one plant that will be a good challenge for me. I have a Tall Red that member buddy gave me that gets 18 feet tall. It probably will not get that tall in my zone, but much taller than 7 feet. This year it will still fit through the door. Next year I don't think so. I will have to dig it up and lay it on its side in the garage or drag it under the house. If I get pups from it before then I might try both ways and see what works best. I think the most important thing to remember is, when it's cold and the plant is not growing, it doesn't need water. That was a mistake I made with my first plant. If it's not growing, the roots will rot with too much water.

That's another challenge here... a rainy winter...

In our winters, sometimes it rains for weeks. If you plant yours in the ground, plant in a mound. That way it will not be sitting in water if the timing is off. If the ground drains well not as big of deal. My ground drains extremely well. I might still make a raised bed and plant there.

When the ground drains well, your plant will need much more water when the weather gets hot and the plant is growing rapidly. Watch your plant close and it will tell you what it needs. Just takes a little time to learn the language.

Yup. You officially have a "Magnificent Obsession". Congratulations! Welcome to the club. I supposedly have a dwarf red something but the P stem is green so I suspect it's another type of something. But it is a Musa and it probably produces a dessert banana since that's the only type my source grows and bird doo plants can't occur in non seeded varieties.

I just tapped the thanks button, oops that doesn't look right.. New to this site.. I think ITap away. Sometimes things get bit boring/slow here I think because newbies are reading and reading then afraid to ask the questions of the "gurus". Many of us are not experts either so ask/comment/start a conversation.

BTW. remember to welcome new folks in the member intro section and, if you think of it, go ahead and introduce yourself there so everyone can acknowledge you.

I have been reading. My only concern, at this point is the one plant that I purchased for $5.00 normally 30.00. The new growth was rotten. Hoping it will survive. Have you had any luck with that?
I was looking to start a new thread, but I haven't figured it out yet.

I was looking to start a new thread, but I haven't figured it out yet.I had one die a year ago; I still mourn it. Oh, I've lost other plants other than Musas over the years but only 1 banana. Sometimes you can't save them. How to save it? Do you have a picture of it? You can post it to your gallery here if you do. (There are instructions under Site Help and Feedback.) And then start a thread about your puppy.

Starting a thread is easy. Why not begin by introducing yourself? From the main page click on Member Introductions. To the left of the Page 1, etc is a link for New Thread. Click on that. Type something in the title area then tab or mouse down to the open area and write something about yourself.

Thank's! I'm a bit of afraid from cold still to come, but i was ansious to do it, and if i have some cold i will protect them... In the landscape you can see some of my guava trees, avocados, and in the flowerbed some pineapple plants. :08:We've had a few hours of 30 degrees here and my plants are fine--even the ones in pots--even the smaller ones. But they weren't in a warm toasty place when we had nights in the 40s; they got used to increasingly cooler temperatures. We've had a few hours of 30 degrees here and my plants are fine--even the ones in pots--even the smaller ones. But they weren't in a warm toasty place when we had nights in the 40s; they got used to increasingly cooler temperatures. Thank you! Yes of course i will report if i'm lucky to get fruit. I have very hope they survive to any cold we could get. Untill now we don't have any cold this winter. I just count two weak frost nights. :goteam:

This banana plant from Madeira Island is an old plant that came from Brazil many time ago, and i think it's a dwarf brazilian... they are resisting very well untill now. I cover them during the night and take it with day light... the ones with worse looking is the dwarf red and the williams, but they are the yougest ones. I'm praying for spring time! :2623:

Hope your plants are okay. We've had some temps in the 30s; the leaves on my bananas are quite bedraggled. But they're obviously alive and I'll bet yours are also; if the ground had frozen then chances wouldn't be good I don't think.

Yes, even the very dry and beat up plant I picked up beside the road and cut off to 15" of P-stem is shooting up. At first the spike was very pale green and I worried it was not real growth but perhaps a release of pressure but today I noticed that the top is leaf green. Gee, I hope that doesn't mean it will fruit when it's that short...easy picking I guess but very odd.

I grew an apricot "bush" (Manchurian apricot bushes are not) for the EX because he said he loved apricots; he did not and I hate them unless dried. It always flowered in February or March in the DC area which was long before the last potential snowfall. You'd think that would be the kiss of death but it nearly always did produce as long as cold/snow was not accompanied by wild winds.

Really? What variety was her?

It was a Red Dacca, while my other ones started with 4 (have 10 now) are lady fingers. I am in Australian Zone 3 which temp wise is the same as zone 8 in USA.

I guess the difference was the Red Dacca was probably had just recently been brought in from another higher temp zone while the lady finger i have have been growing in my nans garden for the last 38 years.

Apart from its stunning appearance, i got the red because the id tag said it was cold hardy and the nursery staff assured me would have no issues growing.

It died at the slightest touch of cold weather in the first few weeks of winter. On either side of it i had the lady fingers all in the same pots.

I cant find another red at the moment, but when i do get another one ill treat it better than my others.

Hi! I think the red dacca is not cold hady, but i'm just starting on banana stuff... It's very sad when we loose a plant like those. We make a huge effort to get them and then they die... very sad! But we learn with errors. :bananas_b

I'm glad your ladies survived. Yesterday I pruned "nipped" leaves from most of mine; I left "halves" where possible. Fortunately they're in back and I'm not fanatical about perfect specimens because they sure wouldn't impress folks driving down my quiet street; they look like a deranged barber worked on them. I've had slow growth all winter; now that's it gotten warmer new leaves are pushing up more often.

LOL, yes i think i have a barber spirit too... i don't like to see the dried leaves too and cut them... By the way two more on the way, one dwarf cavendish and one ice-cream banana plants and in the end of the month one dwarf orinoco and a pré-cavendish from Madeira island that descend from the first banana plants that arrive there in 17-18 century. I know... i admit i turn in a banana fanatic... :waving:

luisport
03-13-2016, 02:27 PM
Regarding this pré-cavendish variety from Madeira island, it was probably the first to be introduced on the Madeira island. It has roughly the same height as the dwarf brazilian but thicker, and this because the clusters are much larger, often passing the 50kg with ease. The clusters are much more compact than the Cavendish, so that often can not stick a finger between the bananas ... Bananas are shorter than Cavendish, but thicker, having the pulp and rind with identical textures to the latter, but is a little sweeter and aromatic that Cavendish ... the origin do not know, but I think it will have been Africa or South America. Many people say it is more resistant to disease than Cavendish.

I used to grow bananas in Illinois and had to bring them in in October and let them out in late April. I found that cutting the top off was ok on the bigger ones and they DO need a little water, even when dormant. You will be able to tell, usually, just be careful.... I said a LITTLE water. (Like a cupful once in January or so and again a week or two before taking them out) I also learned it made little or no difference by midsummer whether you let them go dormant or kept them in sun and watered them more during winter.

I added Rajapuri and a Dwarf Namwa this year to my patch so following your thread to see how your stuff grows. I've got Tall Namwas which have been very good to me but those things are tall, tough to manage, and I'm getting older and wobbly on the ladder!

Good luck!

Hi! Thank's! For me it's difficult, almost impossible to grow tall banana fruit trees. The colder dwarf ones are easier to manage...

I will update this and others i still have on pots. :08:

Not in this place. I have to dig out all my banana plants and choose a better place, more protected.
I don't know if this is 100% musa robusta. This was given to me by a friend from Madeira Island that told me this was from the first bananatrees planted there on 1500 years. This was brought from Cape verde or Brazil... they don't know for shure. My friend study it and told me the plant more near it seems to be Musa Robusta. This is a plant very diferent from Dwarf Cavendish...

and you kno bananas cant trust what you get off the internet. but cavendish subgroup is the only thing I have found off hand.

but still its a very beautiful plant you have. :nanadrink:

How's your experience with Gomera sp?

Well, Gomera it's not doing well because it's not on a good place. Every year die and resprout from roots. But this Eden is doing well because is on a protected place. This tiny spot have almost everything i can put there... will have a few more things...

Hi Luis

It looks like its in shade, you haven't put it under a tree or another large plant have you, if not, it might need fertilizer, if you haven't already given it.
