I have ordered some sprouted sugar cane pieces from Ebay. I have had so much fun storing bananas under my house in winter, I thought I would give sugar cane a try. I have read some very limited data about people burying canes under the soil to store until spring in the south, does this mean that sugar cane can possibly be stored dormant, perhaps in damp peat etc. in a cool place? I am guessing under the ground here would be too cold, or you would see more people growing it. I bet some people on this site grow sugar cane and might know a bit about it. I have Saccharum arundinaceum (hardy sugar cane) but its just not the real thing, and is caneless. I want to grow it mostly for ornamental purposes.

Unfortunately I can't ask my source for more information but I was told that a farmer grew sugar cane as a crop around Wadsworth, Ohio. I can't find any proof. But there is a Sugar Cane Drive in Youngstown which seems odd to me. And I did find this. OT: Anyone ever grow Sugar Cane? No mention about storing dormant pieces but I've sprouted purchased sticks even after I had them in the fridge for a few weeks.

Next time, buy them at a carribean or asian food market and root them yourself in a bucket of water. Way cheaper that way.

I would like to do that, but where I live there are probably no Asian or Caribbean markets for at least 100/200 miles unfortunately lol. Just to get lemon grass, I have to wait till Lowes sells it in small pots, and grow it myself, you cant get it at any markets. I did check a couple of health food stores with no luck. Its very hard to get things out here sometimes.

Those are cool, I am getting ones with a solid purple, or red cane. A few sites say you can bury the canes under the ground for winter storage, but I am guessing that would not work unless you buried them very deep here. I think I will try to make some cuttings each year about fall as they are supposed to be very easy to root, and store them under the house in some damp peat.

i kept it under a light (hps) indoors over the winter
fluorescent shop light would probably due
maybe cut the parent plant up in the fall
and you will have smaller plants with less needs

Too bad you're in the US. Not that hard to get in montreal... You should ask US customs if it's ok for someone to send you cut sugar cane by mail.

Why don't you just get some sugar beats? They'll take the cold weather and give you more sugar than the cane.
