Has any one noticed an increase of pups after high N applactions?
I fertlize with amonium nitrate 30-0-0 and it seems that after fertlizing
everything pups like crazy or is it just coincidence ?

Great question..was wondering the same thing. I buy fresh rabbit manure and make "bunny brew" on a regular basis. After using this..plants took off and starting putting out many pups per plant. This is my first year growing.

You can google the topic: Plant Nitrogen Uptake

I didn't think about it till now. I wanted to see what would happen if I used bunny berries on my Basjoo. So I figured that anything worth doing is worth overdoing. I used the bunny berries as a mulch 4 inches thick. Well the leaves got bigger, greener, and it started pupping soon after. I use the bunny brew on some other plants and noticed better growth but the plants are still small and not of pupping size.

Might just be coincidental, there is a lot of variability in suckering related to the cultivar. Has a lot to do with the degree of apical dominance being expressed.

I was watering my plants with the bunny brew and I found another pup. It is on a Orinoco that is only 22 inches high. Would it have pupped without the brew? I will do a test on this next year.

Try experimenting with bananas that display high apical dominance.

In many plants, the apical meristem produces a hormone which discourages the growth of too many extra shoots (called "apical dominance"), if you destroy the apical meristem it will break this dominance and allow other shoots to grow out. Many of the buds for new suckers are already formed on the plant, they are just being inhibited until the plant gives them permission to grow.

Do you have a plant in mind? A banana plant with a resistance to pupping?

Ok Keith, so I figured out that many plantains display high apical dominance. If I was going to do an experiment with one of those, wouldn't it be a challenge to get two of those plants? Also on the banana side the FHIA 02 had low pup numbers. So I am looking for two pups from a plant that doesn't pup much. Should be fun. I should post that down in banana plants wanted. Wanted- 2 pups from any plant that doesn't pup much. They will be used on nitrogen overload, pup inducing experiment.

"Some banana varieties are slow to multiply because the suckers are retarded due to apical dominance. This is particularly so for plantains such as Mangat en Seipahn."

Orionoco Are very Prolific When it Comes To Suckering, So Is Namwah.

Now 3640's are not, In My Experience.

Thanks Ed

I figured out the Orinoco is. My plant pstem is 2 feet tall and has 7 pups. My Namwah pstem is 3 feet tall and nothing. I guess the Namwah hasn't flipped the switch yet.

The namwah will give you lots of pups I had to remove 2 matts last year , to many plants and little planting space , they are great performers though
