Mine recently got a couple feet tall, nowhere near as green as that, then withered and died.

Mine recently got a couple feet tall, nowhere near as green as that, then withered and died.

I appreciate the input Rob and hopefully you can expound on it.

Was it left connected to the mother or was it growing independently?

If connected, what was the condition of the mother corm when Whitey died?

If independent, how many months did it survive?

Did it put out pups, if so, how many & what colors?

In the past I used the Whiteys to study root growth and also some of the causes of corm rot.

Now I want to know much more.

I'm also collecting data on the Greenies.

My 1st Gen Greenie, produced Variegated & Greenie pups but no Whiteys.

Presently I'm compiling data from 40+ pups of the 2nd Gen Greenies.

Well the mother plant is struggling, and when I finally kill what is left of it I'm sure I will find lots of weevil damage. The one good pup needs to be removed, cleaned, and replanted elsewhere soon. So it was still attached, but I think the mother has put out its last leaf that won't unfurl properly. Greenies, I've still never had out of 20 or so pups over the years.

I have read that all whites sprout then soon die because not having chlorophyll
there is no photosynthesis, but you probably already know that. I would think the mother probably supplied nutrition necessary while it's still attached.

Same thing happens with Canna Stuttgart (Burns in sun ouch) whose variegation is almost identical, solid white dies, ones that revert to solid green become larger due to more chlorophyll, and are called Canna Omega. Some people say epsom salt keeps Stuttgarts leaves from burning as bad, I wonder if it would work with this nanner?

I would think the mother probably supplied nutrition necessary while it's still attached.

Most folks would probably agree with that assessment. The mother plant filled the pup's corm with the necessary nutrients to live/grow/survive for several months abroad.

That would make a very beautiful & interesting houseplant.

No sunlight necessary but requires refill injections of corm juice. :chefnaner:

Another option for some of our banana grafters could be to use a host naner. :08:

Ok here is my whitey
It hasn't done much at all until the last couple days but I will keep you updated on its progress.

July 3rd

http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b498/kevinmeredith1977/B664F32B-9F59-429D-9C63-16DD8B2E3A04_zps6prlcjhn.jpg (http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/kevinmeredith1977/media/B664F32B-9F59-429D-9C63-16DD8B2E3A04_zps6prlcjhn.jpg.html)

July 10 th
It was rainy all week and highs in the lower 70,s during the day. All the corms I got I brought in and out all week when rain was near didn't want any of the corms to have a chance at rotting wanted to keep the soil sand mix around the corms dry and water from around the outside of the pot only.

http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b498/kevinmeredith1977/49AEA450-002D-4A47-BFDF-CF8D29B0D733_zpszpl30dgl.jpg (http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/kevinmeredith1977/media/49AEA450-002D-4A47-BFDF-CF8D29B0D733_zpszpl30dgl.jpg.html)

July 25th
Along the way I took off a little piece of the top that started to brown and I would try to fold out the pieces along the outside that were brown and wet a little bit just down to almost the good parts to keep the inside dry and could see and feel if it was staying firm. You can see in this picture I would let the brown parts folded out completely dry then trim off only the dry parts. Later that day the top part was getting soft and brown again so I cut off maybe a half inch of brown softness to a good white part.I did notice along the bottom of the corn it seemed to be splitting the outside sheath or blade what ever you call it so I figured it was probally starting to wake up finally.

http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b498/kevinmeredith1977/7D54719F-6F54-4FCA-A9FF-39F0A849A2A1_zpsvoamb5ch.jpg (http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/kevinmeredith1977/media/7D54719F-6F54-4FCA-A9FF-39F0A849A2A1_zpsvoamb5ch.jpg.html)

July 27th
The next day it looked like this. It is ugly but in all its ugliness this is a good sign I believe.

http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b498/kevinmeredith1977/15913FB3-63A5-4BC3-BDEA-4FE5DD23BC0B_zpsrhmnim9b.jpg (http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/kevinmeredith1977/media/15913FB3-63A5-4BC3-BDEA-4FE5DD23BC0B_zpsrhmnim9b.jpg.html)

Today July 28th
I think it is going to start pushing up good now.keeping my fingers crossed
But it's looking better. Maybe it will keep going who knows for how long maybe it might give up couple days from now. But I thought for sure couple days ago that it was unlikely it would do much. But I told myself well while it's not doing anything it also doesn't seem to be rotting or dying also so I'm glad I didn't give up hope. I will keep you updated on its progress my goal now is to see how far this whitey will go :08::08:

Forgot to add it is in same place on my deck against the side of the house with the rest of the corms besides the small patupi that's out in full sun and gets sun from around 2 pm till sunset around 9 pm. I don't bring the pots in anymore if it rains but all the ones along the side of the house sits under a little over hang of the roof so gets a little shelter from the rain if it comes. Lately it's been dry only stormed couple nights ago

Ok here is a update. It is doing great so far and pushing out a leaf. So far appears to be all white but only the tip is out. I am hoping for a little bit of green in it to maybe keep it going longer.

The new leaf that came out looks good the other 2 ones are getting dark :(
I moved this under a small table on my deck to see how it would do and so far so good but the next leaf coming out will probally be to tall to keep it under this small table.Maybe I will put it under my basjoo or find some place more shady. Here in a month or so if it's still kicking it will be inside as a house plant.

Looks like the new leaf is going to do the same as the others along the outside :(
Have to play around with location and see if I can slow down the process but it's still growing strong so that's all that matters I guess. The leaves are so white when they first unroll they look so cool :08::08:

Yeah I thought about doing that just bringing it inside now but I don't think it would do as good. I actually treated it with a systemic getting it ready to bring inside to deal with the mites so maybe one more treatment and I will bring it in. I just did soil drench.

Sometimes will have a beer now and then. Sunking here makes a small batch of cognac beer that was really tasty and high alcohol content.
