Welcome to the forum.
I use a regular potting soil with Dri Stall heavily mixed in. I use a weak solution of Miracle Gro once a week or so, sometimes a little more often. I also soak my new plants in rooting stimulant prior to planting, and I've had tremendous luck on that route.

What's Dri Stall?
Dry Stall - Your Horse Deserves a Dry Stall (http://www.drystall.com/dry_stall.html)
It is used to keep horse stalls dry and clean, but some people also use it in garden or potting soils instead of perlite or vermiculite.

Similar product but basically the same thing. I just checked the bag and the brand I got was Stall Dry, not Dri Stall, LOL. It comes in a 40# bag for 18-23 bucks, depending on where you buy it. Most farm suppliers carry it. Just ask for it by one of those names. All the idiots I talked to before I knew the brand name told me they did not carry powdered pumice for use in horse stalls, morons.

Snarkie, I recommend checking into Dri-Stall for all your planting needs.
I prefer Stall Dry around my animals (horse/chickens) because it has the sand like consistency. If you are looking for a soil amendment that promotes a better root growth, you are better off with the Stall Dry which is just like coarse Perlite: I prefer the #3 or bigger sized Perlite as it is more coarse than the finer powdery stuff and therefore giving you bigger pockets inbetween for the roots to grow.
