I went to visit 'Going Bananas' in Homestead, Florida today to get an idea of the ultimate plant size of the fiber bananas I would like to grow. Saw the monster 'Kandrian' - pseudostem so big I would need help to fell it and strip the fiber out. Looks unreal. Got to taste Sweetheart, Saba, Namwah and Pisang Raja. 'Sweetheart' was sweet but really sparkling with acid- it could have been
called 'Sweet Tart'. Sooooo spry, refreshing, and silky. The dead ripe 'Saba' had a complex fruitiness that was my favorite in terms of taste that surprisingly trumped my preference for firmness(soft on the outside, firmer on the inside at that stage). I wish Namwah was available everywhere. Not as complex tasting as the Saba but firm, silky balanced sweet/acid taste. Niiiiiiiiice! Pisang Raja was Rich, spicy, deeply sweet- I am sure it has inspired many desserts. The owner of 'Going Bananas' was so nice and very patient to answer my myriad, somewhat unconventional, fiber related banana questions. He gave us a great tour; there were so many banana varieties and other subtropical and tropical fruit trees. And the Saba pup- I have to take it home on the plane-I bought there gives a new meaning to the phrase "that's a big sucker". The plant itself is gargantuan not as big as Kandrian though. http:// www.bananas.org/gallery/.php?showphoto=58028&cat=500&ppuser=20807
Best, best day! I learned more about banana plants today than in months of study.
