For those that are growing many varieties, which are your favorite desert bananas and cooking bananas?
We have over 30 varieties planted, but only seven have produced so far. I have enjoyed the sweetheart (these developed over the winter and might have been smaller than they typically are) https://scontent-atl1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xtf1/v/t1.0-9/11014639_816104258424664_3931427250091872608_n.jpg?oh=64eaf4ac1c dceffadadfcfa5aae7b28c&oe=563133D4
and namwahs for eating out of hand.

We have Saba with developing fruit right now (anyone know if this is Saba 1 or 2?). This poor plant bloomed after being very dry and a little cold this past winter. Note sure how these will develop. Tasted them at Going Bananas last week and found them to be very good.

Favorite cooking: Any Maoli type, Praying Hands, Fe'i Aiuri
Meh (I grow most of these but consider them average): Kru, Lakatan, Double Mahoi, Dwarf Cavendish, any Iholena, Raja Puri, Saba, Green Red, Silk Fig, Rose
Blech (Some of these I grow, mostly to sell fruit and pups, and eat very few myself): Ice Cream, Williams, Grand Naine, Cardaba, Cuban Red, Silver Bluggo, Most Largo/Bluggo/Orinoco types

Rob you consider lakatan as average?
I havent tried it but heard so much
that this was the sweetest and aromatic.
You placed the Mona Lisa along with the
DB/Mysore/GM/Namwahs?
Anyone else concur?
Thanx.

BTW Great pics gna have to learn how to do that here.

Servatusprime--why did you get rid of mahoi?
I'm new to banana culture, and as a northern gardener, I have the usual limitations of size and short season. My alternatives are those with a ps <5', which means slim pickins without a big greenhouse.
The nanners I'm actively considering are SDC, DC and TT.

My SDC have never produced bananas. You should try Raja Puri. They are short would do good in a green house. The bananas are good too. Once they get established they produce every year.

The tastes of home grown bananas varies by location. Here in San Diego county several of us found Lakatan difficult to grow - being sensitive to both cool temperatures and hot winds. So when they did manage to fruit the taste was understandably of lesser quality.

The double mahoi isn't awful, but as far as fruit goes it isn't that interesting. The multiple pendicules are one of the man reasons people grow it. The fruit isn't much better than a grocery store cavendish.
Since I live in Florida I can grow many varieties in ground So I rather grow something I can't get at the grocery store.

The SDC and TT fruits I've seen are about 4" length on average and the diameter of the flesh is about the same as a pencil.
I hope I can get this one to bloom again it was very good. Enano Gigante' Dwarf Giant.

I have eaten a bunch of different ones and Brazilians tops them all in Hawaii's climate. Namwa and Mysore are also excellent.

I did a taste review on here. Neither the texture nor flavor were great to me.

BTW
Ive never grown banana plants.
Being a transplant from palmtalk.org, some of those
members have immaculate lawns/estates.
Anyway we can incorporate banana culture
as a front lawn ornament as opposed to a
backyard crop?
Any suggestions to maintaining/pruning the leaves?
Cheers!

My entire front yard is full of these "banana ornaments". All edible varieties and no ornamentals. Hope I do not offend anyone, but much better than these wacky dwarfs some people use as lawn ornaments .)

My favorite is the one growing in my yard, whatever it may be, ha ha. Mysore, which I tried in the South Pacific and Namwah, is one I can grow in my area, and does well for my zone.
