View Full Version : Bunch Question...........

I wanna report my experience with the last bunch I collected.............but some questions emerge from this...................
I collect this in June 2015............the ones that do not EXPLODE..........
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=58000&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=58000&ppuser=11331)
It was a huge bunch...............and many fingers just EXPLODE............
At fist time I thought that...........of course.........the main cause was the PRESSURE...........
Some unripe fruits just explode.............
After remove few fingers to give more room to the growth.................even after this some fingers continue to explode.................
So what is THAT.............???
I started to study..................
Another issue is that I do not remove the HEART...............I just give the plant grow freely at this time..................
And after a little research I found that when the HEART.........is removed...........the fingers become longer..............
THAT IS IT.........!!!
The fingers of my bunch are stubby...............very thick..............and many of them just explode...............
BECAUSE I do not remove the HEART................???
I still have questions.............but this is the most plausible explanation that I found...............
If I remove the HEART..............the fingers do not explode just because they grow longer...............
REMOVE HEART = LONGER FINGERS
NO EXPLOSION........
HEART PRESENT = STUBBY FRUITS and possible EXPLOSION
What do you think about that..........???
Is there any other motif to the fruit explosion...........???

Please define "HEART"

Sorry...........kkkkkk............I donīt know how to write..........
Here in Brazil we call it "CORAĮÃO"..........that in english means HEART...........
This part of the Plant............looks like a heart.............:ha:..........thatīs how people call it here...............kkkkkkkkk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_Lcmnci9Wg
My question is that if I remove this part............the fingers grow longer and do no explode.................
I do not remove this part................and look what happens with many fingers of my bunch...........they explode...........

I usually cut the inflorescence, because I have Asian neighbors who make some delicious soup with it. Some people believe that the fruits will get bigger, but I have not seen a dramatic difference here either way.
I think what you might have there is a Pisang Awak type like Namwah or so and it is my experience that the skin of those easily splits when they reach maturity and if they are not harvested quick enough.
It has nothing to do with cutting of the inflorescence.

mine do that sometimes, weather I cut the male flower (heart) or not.

Some varieties are more prone than others. Never had them split green though. I would ask some people in your area if this is common for your area with that variety. I would try something else if this persists with future crops. It might be a fluke for this crop only.

Would water intake be a contributing factor to the fruit exploding?

I guess if you got a toad strangler all of a sudden.

Would water intake be a contributing factor to the fruit exploding?
Yes. It is some kind of Osmosis, because the banana peel is full of water. Not like a cherry though, but as the fruit ripens the peel gradually looses water via Osmosis to the inside fruit. The peels cells start to collapse due to the water loss and the peel becomes thinner and more pliable.

The plant I collected the bunch is the smaller one...........with a tree branch to support the bunch weight.........(already removed in this picture)
Note that the next plant is HUGE..............almost double size in diameter......
Iīm not sure about what Iīm gonna do with the next bunch.........???
How Iīm gonna manage it.............maybe removing the heart...........and removing exceeding fingers...........
I donīt know................

I would not worry, Dwarf Cavs don't normally get super huge bunches.
... if this happens...then worry.

Would water intake be a contributing factor to the fruit exploding?
Depends on where the water intake is occurring, through the peel yes, though through the roots is much less of a factor. Periods of heavy rain can be confusing, is it the water on the ground or the water on the fruit that makes the fruit split. Do green fruit split when grown hydroponically, no. Do green fruit split when stored in water, yes.
...but as the fruit ripens the peel gradually looses water via Osmosis to the inside fruit.
If stored in water that would be correct to some degree, but that adversely effects the flavor and bananas are not stored that way, so actually it's false. The peel looses water to the outside not inside. Simply weigh a green fruit, it will be much lighter when it ripens.

Despite the heavy rain................I add extra water to the roots.................and many times I splashed water with a bucket in the bunch..............just to clean it from the dust...............
Is it an issue........???

What is a toad strangler?
A colloquial phrase meaning a very heavy rain event. It rains so heavy that toads strangle (can't breath).

If i have bananas i will have to prune them? I don't get it...
Yuri Barros
08-09-2015, 08:14 AM
I thought that these end fingers once they grow exactly between the clusters........if I remove them...........the rest will grow more freely..........
I loose many fingers in the last bunch...............due spliting..........
However Iīm prone to accept that spliting is linked with the Banana variety...........not water............not pressure............etc............but is about the banana variety...........in this case Brazilian Dwarf Cavendish...........
Now...............I want to try something different this time.............giving to the cluster more room to grow...............removing the end fingers...........
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=58482&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=58482)
Letīs see what gonna happens..................I will update this thread with more photos................
Iīm also have to decide if I will remove the inflorescence...............the HEART........kkkkk
Some people say that if I remove the inflorescence the finger become more elongated................
.........???...........I donīt know...........
So..........I have to decide...........
But now is too early to remove it.................
I think that I have to wait 2 more weeks.............

How many bananas are you losing to splitting? Less than 44 I bet. You are probably losing a greater yield by removing the fingers on the end than just throwing out the split ones. I'm obviously the least commercial banana farmer in the world, but I thought you just pruned off the smaller fruit from the bottom of the bunch.
Very interesting the difference between growing in hydro and storing in water Keith. What about the sudden change in osmotic pressure when dry soil suddenly becomes soaked from rain? Are you saying you think his nanners are splitting bc he sprays them, or are you just chalking it up to genetics?
Yuri Barros
08-09-2015, 09:44 AM
In fact..............I donīt know the real motif they are spliting..........
Iīm just trying to find it...........
We have all these factors......to study........
Osmotic pressure...............Genetics............or even Physical pressure exerced by too much fingers growing in a limited space............
At this time Iīm working with the last hypotesis............
I want to give more room to each finger than the last bunch...........
I donīt know if it gonna work............???
Yes.......44 fingers is too much..............but I think that I lost 20 to 30 aproximatelly due the spliting on the last bunch.........
I spect to compensate this heavy pruning.........producing "EXPORT QUALITY" fruits..............big and elongated.......
Itīs just a try.........

Good work. There's only one way to find out right? Gunna be a nice bunch either way!!
If i have bananas i will have to prune them? I don't get it...
I copied the following from an outside source............> [begin quote]" You may see your first flower emerge after about six months, depending on the weather. Leave the leaves around it, especially the one protecting the top bend of the stalk from sunburn!
Bottom hands on banana bunch
As the purple flower petals curl back and drop off they reveal a "hand" of bananas under each. Each banana is a "finger".
You may get anything between four to a dozen or more full hands. Then, under the next petal, you'll see a hand of teeny weeny excuses for bananas. Those are the male fingers.
The male fingers just dry and drop off. Only the stalk remains. If you let it grow it will eventually reach the ground.
Some people break off the "bell" (the bunch of purple flower petals at the end) about 15 cm below the last female hand. That way the banana plant puts its energy and reserves into growing big bananas, and not into growing a long stalk. (Commercial banana growers also remove some of the bottom female hands, so the remaining bananas grow bigger.)"[end quote]
Not everyone does it,I hope this helps;see my post " Viente Cohol Bunch Pruned Today " to see what it means.

How's your clump doing? How did the bunch turn out?
the fingers do not split at that time........I harvested and give to friends most part............
this is a very"agressive" starin.........while normal varieties of Cavendish throw one leaf.....this throw 2 leaves......very fast growing........very thick trunk........and big bunch........
I think that its a "professional" variety..........destined to comercial crops.....
pruning the bunch was the key.............
becomes ripe very fast too.....
