I live in an area that gets very hot in summer and cold (for CA) in winter. Because of this, I have two bananas in pots. A D. Jamaican red and SDC, both are in 15gal black containers. I find it is difficult to get all the sunlight possible for my plants without their pots (roots) cooking in the sun. My solution was to build my own planter boxes. They were constructed out of redwood and leftover plywood from my home being reroofed. The bottom of the boxes has good drainage and they are about 6" off the ground for airflow. I used two coats of primer and two of outdoor paint on them. Once the pots were in the boxes, I filled around them and up over the top of the pots with bark chunks. I need to remove a pup from my SDC to send a few states over, probably this weekend. The trellis in the first pic is for one of my hylocereus (dragonfruit) hybrids.
hope you enjoy,

Hey Ethan ,
Did you draw a plan for those ? Cause if you have it on your computer and it wouldn't be too hard to post ....I'm just sayin' .
Those look great and I would like to build some here .

hello Pete,
I did draw a very general plan for them but as with most projects, it was modified.
Basicaly for one box (off the top of my head):
4-20x20 plywood pieces
3-2x4x20 for skids (feet)
6-2x20 scrap plywood (bottom slats)
4-2x24(?) scrap plywood (decorative trim on top)
4-1x1x16? scraps for corner connectors
bunch of screws and few other trim and shim pieces of wood.
I'll see if I can throw something blueprintish together for you.
glad you liked it,
-Ethan
