just put the plants out a few days ago.. and yesterday i divided my two containers of bananas. one had 6 plants the other had 3
i brought them outside towards the end of the day with a cloudy forecast for the next day, however on the third day the bigger ones got fairly sunburned.
bringing them up the stairs from the basement was an endeavour of its own!
these plants have been through some ups and downs
the first banana i bought was in niagara falls my guess is DC
i got a few other varieties that summer
nice growth through that season and some pups
they didnt overwinter well...
i tried spraying the soil off, drying, and wrapping in newspaper and then tucked a cool dark spot in the basement. unfortunately the basement flooded and the stems were reduced to mush.
only the musella lasiocarpa and DC(i think) survived
through that season growth was not quite as vigorous as the first season probably due to poor nutrition and underwatering
that fall they went indoors but stayed in their pots
because of insufficient light, lack of water and nutrition they basically stayed the same all winter and were very slow to start growing in the spring(probably lack of water and food)
i bought another banana plant during this season with three stems
when they went inside this past fall they were re-potted into larger fabric pots. the real momentum picked up in these plants over the winter! (biggest pstem for me so far)
which brings us to where we are now.
my biggest plant and possibly the second biggest, i want to give larger fabric containers and continue with my heavy feedings.
fruit by fall?

lined up all the pups in a row for a pic
starting to move them out of the shade slowly
the mother plant put out a couple new pups already
the musella lasiocarpa has grown rapidly

Do you have any ideas what varieties you have?

the first pic in my most recent post is Musella lasiocarpa
the other bananas i thought were all DC
(currently. had musa zebrina but killed it :( )
there were 2 parent plants
one does seem slightly more compact, shorter fatter
the other is more slender in shape and taller
so i am not really sure
DC was a guess to begin with

its day one of a five day blow... east winds peaking on saturday at over 40 knots on the lake
leafs are already getting torn and temps aren't great either
time to bring the plants inside i think

Only a low of 7C for me so im gunna risk leaving things out for another week or two, as its supposed to warm back up a bit.
subsonicdrone

now its sunny out and i want to leave them out longer
i was hoping to get more of a 50% inside 50% outside ratio
what to do :nanarobot:

yeah i might do the same
i think i will pull them up close to the house and tarp them off somehow

Ya some sensitive ones I may shuttle in and out but the big guys are too much work and only get moved once!

i need another rope to raise it and keep it from flapping
luckily the wind died down a bit
i put a running bowline around each windowsill and tied into the deck

bananas seem ok but re-arranging things allowed animals to access plants
i had roughly put back the sugar canes before the pic but they were strewn all over
well all the plants are inside.
i waited a little too long as you can see by this emerging leaf:
a few scrapes here and there but they made it down alright
the bigger ones were heavier than i was expecting
the biggest two had to be propped up on an angle so the leafs can unfurl .. some of the others may have to be put on an angle through the winter depending on how much bigger they get
the pic doesnt show the angle very well..
here they are once everything had been moved in:
dont worry i watered them after these pics were taken!
.....
oh man what a day!
went to the beach to fly the trainer kite with my nephew
and found banana plants!
the marina at bluffers park had a few small banana plants on their gas dock over the summer
i wondered what they would do with them come fall...
well they hacked off the leaves, dug them up and threw them in a brush pile!
i tore off some of the outer leaves because they seemed to be starting to rot...
one of them i may have peeled too many layers off because it seemed a little floppy after. cut it down a bit?
put them all in one container because i am already pressed for space in there
put it in the path, so it will need to be pulled out whenever i go in there
i think it may be basjoo (total amateur guess based on this one leaf)
things have started to grow again since coming inside
the big bananas on an angle have been trying to right themselves..
i have rotated them once so far to combat this and to facilitate the next leaf unfurling
it has only been a few days since they were found and already some good signs
new leafs emerging
not going all that great this winter
everything has stopped growing
had spider mite and scale problems
bought predatory mites and squished scales for a week or two
seemed as though everything was good but they came back
planning on putting some time in squishing and replacing bulb
hopefully i can get them moving again before going outside
last year at this time they had momentum...
little update 10 04 2016
vegetation is looking sparse compared to when things went inside
these two havent grown in months
the two biggest leaning in the back
they havent grown in months either
nothing like last winters growth
these two plus some of the other smaller plants are still putting out small leaves
this pic shows the difference in light colour between the hps side and the fluorescent shop light side
so may 21 2016 i brought the plants outside
kept them in the shade longer this time
last year they got pretty scorched by the full sun
this year only my tea plant got scorched
this one had some rot..
i peeled a lot of layers off.. i was worried i had peeled too many off
it is starting to grow.... my mom propped it up for me
the plants werent looking that great after this winter especially the musella lasiocarpa
it did not grow any leaves over the winter
completely dormant and leaves died back
but it is now pushing out a new leaf
here is my dumpster find:
the little ones from JP
the plants seem happy now and i should probably start fertilizing
end of june and here is haw they are doing
separated some pups today
JP's mystery banana
here they are before
some little roots on there.. good sign
pups with pups
in a few weeks i might separate more off
after...
here are the separated pups freshly potted up
here is a pic of part of the yard (more banana plants out of view)
update21 08 2016
the pups are gone ... stolen? taken by raccoons maybe? i was away for a week
anyhow things are coming along nicely although i know this is near peak
the weather will change soon

Ya was 6C here this morn as well. I also have a tough time with raccoons and squirrels.
subsonicdrone
10-01-2015, 09:48 AM
Thanks JP for the compliment and also for the pups!
they arrived this morning relatively unscathed
(considering how many flips they probably did)

Yeah, the bamboo sticks do the trick. The box can take many hits that way without the plants suffering from it. I'm happy they're ok.
Oh and we had 4 degrees here last night. Brought the rest in today... DC suffered a bit.

i am bumping my own thread...
i had been updating pictures without making a new reply
and the list of pictures had become way too long
so i have created this folder with all the banana pics which were once part of the thread
Bananas by Jeff Yadunno | Photobucket (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/library/bananas)
password is:
bananas
had the plants under a tarp the other night....
i had a 1500W heater going too... to postpone bringing them in and running the lights
Do I see pups coming out?
subsonicdrone
09-17-2016, 07:08 AM
yeah, the pups are further evidence that i have 2 varieties where i thought they were both dwarf cavendish
and these were my dumpster find that i assumed to be basjoo
went to take these pics just now and a flock of birds landed on a nearby tree making quite the commotion
the pic doesnt do it justice... there were lots of them

my biggest plant is showing signs of bunching up from the cold already
Hammocked Banana

It's a Cavendish alright!!

i saw what i thought was another partly unfolded leaf pushing up beside the other leaf...
but it was actually just torn and the other half is what looked like a new leaf
this spring my friend asked for a banana plant for his balcony.. and my sister asked for one too.
i couldnt part with my plants.. and i wanted to support a local vendor for a while now so i bought 2 clusters of plants from her.
one looked like a cavendish and it went to my sister
the other guy flopped and it ended up in the backyard of another friend for the summer... just got it back
it seems to not like the cold and i think it was underwatered for some time.
what do you think? dwarf red?
Hammocked Banana

Shotty a dwarf red pup!!!!
I just love the color! Nice!

i have one more which is already separated
i brought the lady(whom i got this from)
some of youre mystery pups yesterday afternoon JP
anyone out there used to watch the sitcom red dwarf?
i was going to post a pic of the cast with a question mark under the pic of the
banana plant but did not get around to it
i am trying to decide when to bring the plants inside...
tomorrow... or do i set up tarps and heaters all to get an extra week outside?
leaning towards bringing them in tomorrow.
instead of propping the big plants on an angle i might just keep them upright
and trim them to fit
i am going to pick up the one that is at my sisters place today... ill post a pic of it
subsonicdrone
10-07-2016, 07:33 AM
the stem on the left had a couple yellow leaves pulled off just before the pic
looks like dwarf cavendish to me but who knows
subsonicdrone
10-08-2016, 05:36 PM
brought the plants in today...
here is my musella lasiocarpa before going in...
it did not do so well over the winter last year and it looked similar last fall
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_0866_zpslhrtmghp.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_0866_zpslhrtmghp.jpg.html)
here it is mid january...... should bounce back come spring
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/2014_0601_024623_001_zpsypehduyf.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/2014_0601_024623_001_zpsypehduyf.jpg.html)
here is my biggest cavendish(i think) headed down the stairs
this is what the base looks like on that plant...
might not be as big around as last year this time
i trimmed it and kept it upright this year
not much more room to grow though
few more plants.. ladyfinger in the centre
here is the base of JP's mini mystery nanner after heavily removing pups
this one is tangent
only problem is i dont have my lights set up yet!
got the lights set up 2.5 days later
almost all the leaves fell off my plumeria but the bananas seem happy enough
started with the spraying of water on the plants and i think they like it
i also got some sprayngrow and used that once so far
here is the biggest plant hitting the ceiling
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_0893_zps1reppuuk.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_0893_zps1reppuuk.jpg.html)
and here it is a couple days after getting cut shorter
ok so last year i got those free plants discarded by the marina nearby
well today i spoke with the owner of the plants
he had taken 6 pups inside already and said i was welcome to take the rest
and here they are indoors with the others
the others:
some new pics with the lights out so the colour looks more natural.. just after being sprayed down with water
little update.. its december
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_1624_zps0otsxuty.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_1624_zps0otsxuty.jpg.html)
when they went inside:
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_1235_zpsjwiwjel2.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_1235_zpsjwiwjel2.jpg.html)
and now:
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/2014_0601_024550_001_zpscm6lv9db.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/2014_0601_024550_001_zpscm6lv9db.jpg.html)
my largest plant was hitting the ceiling when i brought it inside
the leaf that came out next had to be cut back repeatedly as it emerged
what was left of it was only about 8" of leaf
the plant slowed right down and older growth died back
as it died back i peeled them down to avoid rot and this reduced the pstem height a bit
the next leaf had to be cut back to help it emerge
but only once and now that is the biggest leaf in the room
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_2037_zpsgjmqe8sq.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_2037_zpsgjmqe8sq.jpg.html)
from the largest to now the smallest plant, JP's mystery nanner
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_2044_zpsucjopymt.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_2044_zpsucjopymt.jpg.html)
JP's mystery banana again
one pstem lost some height the other stayed tall... they used to be identical
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_2296_zpsfsjmeg7m.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_2296_zpsfsjmeg7m.jpg.html)
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_2304_zpsaua6di8o.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_2304_zpsaua6di8o.jpg.html)
all the leaves showing grew over the winter because in the fall all the leaves were cut in half
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_2292_zpsxnf0uuyf.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_2292_zpsxnf0uuyf.jpg.html)
pretty slow rate of new leaves though
should be soon enough that i start bringing them outside
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_2862_zpssiinlm0t.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_2862_zpssiinlm0t.jpg.html)
started bringing them outside a bit at a time so they could hang out under the cedar tree and get used to the sun
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_2922_zpsorfg0fll.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_2922_zpsorfg0fll.jpg.html)
ok now those ones are in the sun and the remainder were brought upstairs and under the cedar tree
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh57/subsonicdrone/IMG_2924_zpsqqi0wngf.jpg (http://s253.photobucket.com/user/subsonicdrone/media/IMG_2924_zpsqqi0wngf.jpg.html)
