Hello. As you might guess from the name, I am one of your Central American members. Originally from Delaware, I came here after retirement and loved it here. Bananas grow well everywhere in Panama. Chiquita used to ship bananas from a town near the Pacific border with Costa Rica. That's not where I am, though. I am in the mountain section where coffee is grown. The name of the town is Volcan.
The bananas were here when I bought the property, so I have no idea which variety they are. I have absolutely no experience in growing bananas. I am told that they have been growing unattended for about three years. A gardener attended ocassionally to keep the lot presentable. The weather is perfect in my opinion. All year, the temperature is in the eighties during the day and mid sixties at night.
The bananas grow well, but I could probably do better. I have never fertilized them. I have read something about mulching. I have no idea about that. We love bananas and we love sharing with the neighbors. We could probably sell a few at the local flea market, but I don't pick them off the bunch correctly. The banana is half peeled. I will need more bananas because we now have two horses. Horses love bananas ( and any other vegetation).
I would like to plant a few of the small, red bananas. They are very sweet. I have no idea where to get them or even how they are sold for planting.
I hope to learn a lot of you. Perhaps I could share a few stories.
