I have this banana plant. I know what it was called when given to me but there is some air of mystery about it.
Let's see if we can positively ID this banana and then I will tell you what I was told it was.

Given to you as Cali Gold, but probably just Dwarf Orinoco.

Given to me? Maybe you mean sold to me.

I'm still not sure I can tell the difference between Orinoco and California Gold? I grew Orinoco and I only hope California Gold has a better flavor. Orinoco was OK but I wouldn't pay a lot for one if it wasn't different. BTW, I'm still guessing Orinoco.

I was just using your wording…

given to me after I paid for it, sorry for the bad wording.

Actually I have several of these, one was given this one I paid for. Both came from the eventual same source.

Do you know what the difference is between the two plants? The flower is beautiful. I think my neighbor is growing this plant but he never lets the bananas fill.

I don't. which is why I posted this thread, hoping that someone can positively ID it. It was sold on ebay for a good chunk of change it was like everyone wanted one. Now I don't want it if it's an orinoco. My gold fingers taste great!

From what I read, they are identical to Dwarf Orinoco.
With only one discernible difference, cold tolerance.

If both are planted in a cold environment and both survive, then it wasn't cold enough.
If both die, then it was too cold.
If only one dies, then the survivor is the Cali Gold or ....

...if the Cali Gold dies, then you either had them mislabeled or your yard has different microclimates.

Here we call them Mafafos, but theres many local names, Burros, Carolina King, Texas Star, Kentucky Wonder...

Does Greenearth get their trays of Cali Gold from Agristarts?

Are you growing the real Goldfinger or the one from Agristarts?
