I got these a couple years ago on clearance with no tags saying what they are. Does anyone recognize the variety? Any help is greatly appreciated.

First post.....Welcome to the Jungle!!

What Big Box store did you get them in.....

What grow zone are you in.. Looks like you are a little south from the soil and foliage and you have had recent heavy rains.....this helps because stores in different states stock different plants for the growing area... are you able to provide more plant/store history?

If pressed I will say Musa basjoo...ish ......being long and spear like but they lack the red midrib typical of a small plant.

Also the foilage looks very similar to ginger

I do not think they are Basjoo: the leaves are too narrow.

Unfortunately I have no idea what it is!

Thanks for looking. I live in Arkansas, zone 7. I got them at a farm and ranch type store called Atwoods and none of the workers knew what they were.

I'd say it's probably turmeric... The foliage looks more like turmeric than ginger. I'm pretty sure it's in the zingiberaceae family. One good way to know would be to check if it's a corm or rhizomes. If it is rhizomes and the inside is bright orange, you are probably the proud and lucky owner of a beautiful turmeric plant. That being said, I am no expert... If possible, show us pics of the root system.

Different view. Pretty sure it's not ginger or turmeric.

Looking at the base of the plant, I'd say you're right. Good luck.

Nancy,

2 or 3 years ago I purchased a couple of marked down "basjoo" from Lowes. Unlike normal Basjoo (which I have experience growing), these pretty much die back on me, and never attained any sort of stature. They've been in a permanent state of MEH.

One of my very first posts was about those bananas, and I have a photo somewhere in that thread

One of them flowered (pink) for me, so I came to accept they were probably Velutina.

Mine look sort of similar to the basjoo but the leaves are a little off. I got them almost dead with one sad little leaf each. I paid 50 cents for the both of them. They started getting pups last summer but no flowers yet. But maybe when they're a little older and bigger I'll be able to tell better. The cold doesn't seem to bother them (upper 30's and lower 40's), if that helps any.
