Garlic should get added to every recipe. Ok maybe not every recipe, but fresh home grown garlic should at least be considered. I am sure you would not consider putting garlic in your ice cream, or would you? Regardless of what you do with garlic, one thing we can all agree on as home vegetable gardeners is, to grow our own.

I haven't had great success growing garlic yet, I don't think I've got the timing right. Seems like if I plant at the end of August, I will have a crop ready early July the following year. There is nothing like the smell of fresh, home grown garlic.

I had some sprouting and stuck them in the ground a month ago; I waited too long because only one is up. But I know it was the wrong time so I'm not going to fret. I will persevere because I can't buy them loose any longer. Only sleeves from China or pricey tasteless huge honking bags from CA. Um, no thank you.

At the same time I also planted onions. Some that sprouted and sets that were here at the wrong time. All are up so I'll probably just have some nice green onions this year. Which isn't a bad thing...back when I lived in the DC area I could buy scallions (big bunches) 3 for $1; the price is still the same. Here they want $1 for a puny bunch. My 50 cents spent on those sets will be about $4 worth when harvested.

Not planning on garlic ice cream unless you provide a T&T recipe that you've made.

Someone has to add some tips to this thread, just so the title makes sense.

Tip 1: Know what type of garlic grows in your area. Softneck here, darnit. I miss those "hot" hardnecks I used to buy from a grower in OH.

I don't have contact information but the farm was on 94 north of 18. They have a roadside veggie stand but garlic is their fall crop. If you want to purchase stock, I'd recommend We grow great garlic in Wisconsin (http://www.wegrowgarlic.com/) I've known Martin, a true and generous gardener, on the Net for many years; one of their varieties is named after him.

I've lost all interest in growing garlic. I can buy a refrigerated, 3 pound bag of peeled garlic from Gilroy for less than $1 per pound at CostCo. Good. More room for other tubers in my garden.
