Hi!

Just found this site! I have a small banana plant I have had for 2 years now. I have no idea what it is. I have been finding lots of info here about why the leaves turn black in winter and how to get it to grow in summer. I also learned that this should be a much bigger plant by now!?! I live on Vancouver Island and I think I might find a nice spot for it to spend the winter outside protected. I thought these liked warmth year round but apparently they like a dormant period!

Thanks for all the info!

Sean

Sean....Welcome.
I was an Islander a few years ago too. It seems that the Canadians are getting popular on the site. Where do you live on the Island?
If you are going to try and overwinter your plants outside you will first want to correctly identify them or you may risk killing them if they are like most bananas which won't tolerate the cold wet winters of Van. Island.
You will have much luck in that climate with Musa Basjoo, Musa Sikkimensis, Musella Lasiocarpa (banana relative) and many others which will likely need more winter protection.

A very welcome sean , it is always helpful if members put the place/country where they live and the USDA-zone in their profile. This helps with answering
questions.

Thanks for the welcome!

As was suggested here are a few more details.

I live in Campbell River, BC which is near the north end of Vancouver Island.

I think we are Zone 8a here. I will add it to my profile!

After doing some reading I am certain that my plant is a Musa Basjoo
