We are considering two types of canistel but can only plant one. Does anyone have any personal experiences with both "oro" and "tropo"? We want good, sweet flavor with moist flesh (as opposed to the dry varieties). We plan to prune it back to 10 or 12 feet in Z10a. Any input is appreciated.

Where are you located? It makes a big difference. USDA hardiness zone 10a in Florida is very different from 10a in California.

We are in Florida. I know it can grow here as I know of other specimens in the area. I just was wondering about significant differences in the tropo v. oro types.

I've never tasted this fruit until early this year when I visited Larafarms
his canistel were sweet & moist not dry.
A week or so later I found a roadside "wild" tree

I don't think I let it rippen long enough as this one tasted dry

Perhaps you can call Larafarms and ask what are the different in varieties

THANKS so much! Just had a great conversation with the Lara Farms guy and he helped out my decision greatly. It's good to talk to someone who actually knows the flavors of these fruits and can give an informed comparison. We will order from them if we can work out delivery. Sadly, they don't ship :(. The phone number was 305-253-2750. Lara Farms - Mangos, Mamey, Caimito, Starfrit, Jakfruit, Guava, lychee, Longan (http://www.larafarms.com)

I've never had a dry canistel, moist yes, dry no. If canistel were like mango I wouldn't eat them.
I have a Fairchild #2 canistel, and it's delicious, albeit moist not juicy!
