Hi,
Glad to be here.
Just bought two banana plants in the last week so I am
really new to them, not new to plants have lots of others
like brugs, begonias and such, I started reading about
Musa basjoo and how hardy they are and bought one from
a nice lady on ebay, then I was at Lowes and bought one
there also that I have yet to plant, Im not really sure if
they will have enough time to grow a good root system
between now and cold weather so they could be mulched
and left outside? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard!
Some of the cold-hardy experts should soon chime in for you in regards to your question. We don't need to worry about that here in Florida :p

Hi Jarred,
Thank you for your very warm welcome!
Wow! how nice to live in Florida!
Just wondering do the plants there have any down time?
Or do they just keep growing?
Many Thanks,

They slow down in the winter but it's somewhat all year round for most of them.

Hello Gardenpaw!
Last year I kept my basjoo in pot for the winter with grow lights to keep them gowing so the corms could get some size. I am going to finally get them in the ground this weekend, lol... So I say go for it and protect them very well this winter.

Hello BGreen,
Thank you for answering my post.
One of the Basjoos I have is maybe 12 in. tall and I did
plant it in the ground, the other one is 3-4 ft tall and I
hav`nt planted it as yet, hopefully they will do some
fast growing before it gets cold otherwise I will be doing
the same thing with the grow lights especially with the
small one.
Thanks again for the good information!

I'd stick the other one in the ground too. Just water the heck out of it, and fertilize regularly, to get the most growth that you can out of it. Then protect it really well with lots of mulch in the winter, and it should come back just fine. I've found that it can be almost as challenging keeping bananas alive inside the house during the winter as it can in the ground. Besides, if it doesn't come back, they are cheap and you can get another one next year. Good luck!
Oh, and welcome!

Hi Frank,
Thank you for your warm welcome!
I really appreciate all of the wisdom I have found on this
site, everyone has such good information and so friendly.
I am planting the other basjoo today and will do as you
suggested, lots of water and fertilizer.
Thanks so much!

Hi Dan & Tara,
Thanks for the heads up,LOL
Yes, Im already thinking about how Im going to mulch and
was wondering if anyone has ever used concrete blocks to
put around the bananas then put mulch inside then a tarp
on top?
I see your from Northern In. is this your first year over-
wintering bananas?
Nice talking to you:2130:
