After seeing Randy4uts pics of his back yard, I got the idea that it would be cool to start a thread where we could all post pics of our yards. I think it is great to see how people incorporate different types of plants and other features in their landscaping, so PLEASE ..., consider adding yours to this thread. It's also a good way to document changes by updating new pictures.
I have a small city lot so space is my biggest issue! This is the backyard , pics are clockwise from left: Manzano(back left hidden), FHIA-3,D.Namwah,D.Brazilian,Nino,Belle,Sh3640,Misi Luki,H.ColorMini In pots:Siam Ruby,D.Cavendish,Pernambuco pineapples, Logee's Ladyfiger(not pictured)

I have some bamboo behind the larger bananas that can't really be seen, and still have pineapple plants that need to be planted, so I'll have to update some time later! Hope you enjoy!

I've never had a yard to grow bananas in, but this is the closest thing I have. I these are pretty much the last of my plants for now, my parents are only keeping the 'Rose' and the 'Saba', I'm just waiting for the M. rubinea fruits to ripen before it goes to the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Wow! Love the indoor bananas! Also love the Bob Marley wall hanging!
I lived in Colorado from 1989 to 2004. Part of that time I lived in the "banana belt" AKA the Arkansas River valley from Buena Vista to Canon City.
Heres a few random shots of my yard.

Sailfish,
Just a little FYI on posting pics... When you are wanting to post a pic, click on the small picture in the above tool bar... A little window will open with "URL: " in it... Just copy and paste the URL from your photobucket picture that you want to post in the small window that opened and then click OK... Give it a try...:2208:
Sailfish
07-18-2007, 12:01 PM
Yeah I had tried that.
But you made me go back and relook and I see what happened.
and I fiugred it out.
Photobucket has that "share" link now, well I copied that url into the image pop up window instead of the actual URL for posting the image.
doh :0491:
Thanks!!

Glad to hear you got it... I really enjoy seeing others pics, but sometimes time is a factor and I don't like to wait to see through a link, so posting directly on thread is "instant gratification!!!"

Hi Y'all ,
This is my place , all the beds in thepic (visible Part)are new ! We worked all spring on them and they are starting to fill in . There is an even newer bed on the other side of the drive . The bushy green mess all about is my verigated pepper plants . I thought they would look good, and they do UP CLOSE , as a ground cover / filler . Next year I'm only using ee's and coleus for this .

You were my "Hero" keeping so many Musa in your home (and flowering them ¡¡¡) . I liked very much the video tours "safari" you take for us to your private jungle.
Nice yards¡¡ and a nice beach Erlend (very different from the spanish ones during summertime) :)

Tangy, that rockwall is super cool. I'm thinking of making hypertufa rock to surround my pond sides. Half of it is above ground and I don't really care for the wood surround.
Great link, Jarred!

No, they're not hardy here. I sure wish! I'm not even sure if they're hardy even as far north as northern Florida.
Thanks for the nice comments.
My bananas aren't all what they should be in the yard this year. The ones in the greenhouse for sale are great this year though. Something had to give time-wise, so it was some of my personal landscaping in the yard.

Everybody's gardens look great and very colourful, and so neat and tidy too. At the moment mine is not at it's best as we are training 2 new young dogs to be garden friendly, and not to dig holes, and chew plants. So the new small bananas are caged in rebar to protect them against rough play, and the flower beds are festooned with wire netting.

Good question! I haven't seen any form of bloom yet so I've had no seed. If I do and can collect some I'll let you know. However, not sure that they'd come true to type. I saw some for sale in 3 gal. pots at the local Home Depot a few weeks back. You might check and see if your's has any. I was surprised to see them there.

I did read that the seed pod makes a loud pop and then throws the seeds far and near. they probably won't grow true from seed but you can try some.

The bird may take a while to grow for you, but the Maurelli should be quick - I got mine in the beginning of June in a 6" pot, probably an 8-9" plant. 2 1/2 months later it is about 7' to the top of the leaves (although that includes the pot). Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words guys!
I don't have any idea if there are different types of Maurelli, or if its simply individual genetics. This is the first and only one I've grown so far, and I'm very satisfied ($10.99).
Not sure how I'll overwinter it yet, but most of my overwintered plants have taken far too long to grow at a decent speed, although 6 months indoors takes it's toll. My basjoos all either died or took forever to get started and are now still quite small. It almost makes sense to start with new plants each year. Hopefully next year, if it survives, the Maurelli will grow tall, not fat!
For the record it is in Miracle Grow "Organic" mixed with extra perlite and peat moss, with a total of 2 feedings of Miracle Grow Tomato food (20-20-20) this summer.
Miracle Grow "Organic" makes me think of McDonalds "Healthy" - somehow it doesn't add up!!!

Very similar to Maurelli, except it grows more slender and has slightly more green on the leaves. And in my opinion a much nicer plant than Maurelli. It grows a lot quicker aswell.A truly fantastic plant. The one pictured I've had since May,when it arrived it was in a 9cm pot and had 4 leaves,so not much biggerthan a seedling.

Hope you had a nice Holiday, bet the weather was better than what we had for the last fortnight, felt like October, very chilly, wet and very windy. As you've no doubt discovered, unless you've been very lucky and got away without any damage to your garden.I had a Sikki red tiger snap, and almost lost a Basjoo too,and a trashed Sabal:2687:

Nice looking Ensete!
Nucci60- The reason they aren't in the ground is because last fall and this summer we did some construction and landscaping. Now I need to locate a good spot for a permanent basjoo! The problem is this part of NJ, unlike what most people picture as the Tollbooth State, is very heavily wooded, and we have giant trees everywhere creating lots of shade. Finding a spot with full sun is tricky, and the best we have is square on the new patio!
But I should try next spring- they didn't do well at all being stored in a warmish basement, only one survived and that is still small, taking a long time to recover! Probably be safer in the ground under 3 feet of snow!

Hi Taylor. The darker green banana plant the cat is licking a dwarf cavendish, everything else is just Musa Basjoo. Cornelius is a weird cat, he likes to lie in puddles and is quite interested in water in general. I like him because he follows me around when I am watering. I missed probably the best photo op of year when a flock of turkeys ( 7 or so ) walked right in front of my bananas and bringing up the rear of the procession was Cornelius, walking right behind them.

I'll see if I can do this properly. I put the pictures in my photo gallery just in case it doesn't work. Well, as expected, I can't get these pictures to show up on here, I think I'm computer illiterate sometimes. But I put five or six new pictures of my yard I just took in my photo gallery on this site you can look at.
This is my Indiana yard.

Stags are my other weakness. There are several other large ones around you can't see and the BIG one I had to cut in pieces to get out of my ex's yard. It had a ball about 5 ft in diameter. Now I have chunks just lying around until I figure out what I am going to do with them. I've sold off a bunch of pieces. There are also a bunch of other kinds of stags mounted on boards or hanging in the gazebo.
How long? It depends on how it is mounted. On a board, it will never get real big. I usually take a large wire basket and put about 4 or 5 plants around the outside. In a few years it looks pretty good. Don't expect anything big for at least 5 years though.

Sandy,How long does it take to get that alocasia to that size? Do you make it go dormant in winter or store in your greenhouse? Your place looks great!:rappinnana:

Thank you. My personal landscaping actually doesn't look all that great this year compared to last year. I was way too busy keeping all the plants for sale watered in our drought and heat this summer to mess with my personal plants this summer. Hopefully next year will be better!
This alocasia is two years old. I just chucked it into the greenhouse over the winter and popped it out this spring. It really didn't grow in the greenhouse, but maybe one or two leaves, but it still looked good and green this spring. It was only about 3.5 feet tall this spring, and I thought it was big then! I have found if you want them to grow faster, turn them loose and plant them directly in the ground for the summer. And water the heck out of them. Luckily this one stayed watered because it's right next to the small greenhouse and a hose faucet too.

Thanks, Mark for the kind words... The colocasia in the first pics are Colocasia 'Black Runner', and the green ones are just the plain old ee's I bought from a large box store. The green ones have been in the ground year round for 3 summers, now. This will be the first winter the black ones will be left out... I do have 3-4" of mulch covering all my beds, so I suspect that is giving them a little extra measure of protection in the winter!!!
As far as posting the pics, I don't mind at all. I take that as a compliment. I do appreciate your asking first!!! BTW, if it is not too much trouble, Mark, please e-mail me the link you insert into the uk oasis site.... Thank you so much!!!

I can grow them almost all year, the summer months are too hot! If you're willing to start them from seed, try growing Odoriko hybrid. Nope, it's an uphill view with a bit of blue sky and clouds in the background. From the deck at the rear of the yard, the ocean is visible 8 miles away from the SW to the NW, with the Del Mar Fairgrounds being directly west.

Info about Odoriko Hybrid tomato
I checked the site and when I tried to order here's what they are asking:
Subtotal: $3.25 per packet . There are 15 seeds per pocket.
This estimate is for ZIP code 93907.
Change ZIP code
Shipping: $4.60
Total: $7.85
I wonder if the shipping is worth it.

One thing to keep in mind is that , this is not an ordinary tomato. So your going to pay more for it. As far as the shipping goes, $4.60 to ship one packet? Each seed better weight an once or more! LOL! Shipping is to high for just one packet.

I just moved to Central FL 4 years ago and 6 months ago I bought my very first house with my partner near Cocoa Beach!!!! This house was TRASHED!!! :islandsharkbanana: It was a foreclosed home. But we own an interior renovatoin business and we've been fixing it up. Most of it on the inside is done other than a bathroom (and one isn't just quite finished yet) and tiling the floor of the entire house (that'll come in a year or two). We're sticking with the terrazo for the moment (I HATE IT). Not my flooring of choice, but it'll do for now. It has many pot holes in it from carpet tack strips. There wasn't one room in the house that didn't need TLC, and we're talking more than the human society needs! This includes the yards!
I currently have: Dwarf Cavandish, Pisang Cylon, Dwarf Puerto Rican, and Puerto Rican Plantain.
I have purchased and attempting to be patient with the USPS for Jamaican Red, Williams Hybrid, Orinoco, Manzano, and Saba (all from MediaHouse, Check out his auctions/classifieds!!! Thanks a bunch Jarred!)
This place has been great and inspiring!! And VERY addictive!
Here's pictures of the back yard and break down of what's going on back there! Hope you all enjoy! It is a mess now, but one day, it'll be a dream come true!

This is how the "banana forest" looks currently, under construction. Close to the end of porch is going to start a rather large (for this yard) kidney shaped pond going from the fence to the wall of the back porch. There will be a bridge going over the pond and a small white picket fence on the other side to enter the veg. garden! Bananas and bromeliads with be the focus here. There will be a path leading to the bridge and along the path will be bird baths filled with herbs!
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=8483&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=8483)
This is the veg. garden section of the yard. I just tilled up the ground and removed the grass and today trimmed the pine tree to allow more light an to keep from having limps falling on my power lines. There will be a white picket fence added just in front of where the picture was taken for access to the garden.

This is the shower area so that you don't track dirt (or sand from the beach) into the house. Yes, it has hot water!!!! Just in case some of you are curious, the blue and red pipes are called PEX, they're what you replumb houses with now days (and also in some new construction) and they're VERY durable... much better than PVC (can break), Copper (lighting can cause pin holes, I've seen it happen with devistating results if you don't know about it), Polybutyene (grey pipes, no longer made anymore, there was a HUGE class action lawsuit over that one), or better than anything else you can think of!!!!

Wow, what a great compliment! Thanks!
The galleries on the UKOasis site (now Growing on the Edge) was inspiration for me. Those backyard gardens are truly impressive. I'm really going for the tropical rainforest/jungle look...as opposed to the tidy landscaped yard with tropical looking plants. Since palms or tree ferns are nearly impossible to grow in my climate without highly involved protection, I try making use of any hardy plants. That's why you'll see common plants like hostas and Jerusalem artichokes in my tropical looking garden.
Last year was only year two of my backyard makeover. Just wait until my tropical looking trees and bamboo grow larger! :2559:

Here's how my backyard looks this summer, looking uphill from the 2nd story of my home. From the bottom, follow up the path 3 or 4 turns to the bright gate in the left-to-right chain link fence. My orchard is beyond that gate, continuing uphill to those faintly visible banana leafs near the top of the picture just left of center.

Lynn,
All of your stuff just looks awesome! Glad the little 'Mickey Mouse' bulbs finally got going for you. Mine is about 3' tall right now. You'll probably start getting little laterita pups popping up all over the place pretty soon from the one in the ground. It's a loose clumper so don't be surprised if some show up a foot away or so! You'll be cussing me before long!

07-16-2008, 12:50 PM
I think you'll likely get a flower a little later in the summer. How tall is the laterita now?
The one I divided and repotted (and all the pups came from) is between 5'-6' now and it hasn't flowered again yet, other than the very first flower I showed back earlier. I'm sort of surprised but I think it's just growing like crazy (it has about 10 pups in the pot) with all the new room for the roots and rhizomes. I just sent Taylor a couple of pups off of it, in fact. I think as soon as it fills up it's root space a bit it'll start blooming pretty prolifically just like it did last year.
I've had a Musella blooming since March and a velutina blooming for a few weeks. Otherwise, I'm still awaiting bloom on M. coccinea, M. 'Thai Gold', and M. mannii. I'm pretty sure all of these ornamental varieties should bloom soon. Of course, I'd like my darn 'Orinoco' to bloom before Aug. as well but it's taking it's sweet time this year! I"m starting to suspect that my SDC may be getting ready to bloom. I'll keep you posted.

Lynn, your cannas look great! My musafolias haven't grown that much. What kind of fertilizer are you using?
Dean, When I put them in the ground in April, I mixed milorganite in the soil, then gave them a heavy dose 2wks later. This is my 1st year for milorganite and all my plants are wayyyy bigger than they've ever been!!:woohoonaner:
Of course I fertilize the heck out of them with other fertilizers when the weather started heating up. When it gets reallll hot; I hold off on fertilizing all plants. ( Cuz Paul James said so )
Oh yea I gave them nitrate of soda also when planted in April.
Richard
07-23-2008, 10:56 PM
Milorganite fertilizers (http://www.milorganite.com/homeowners/products.cfm) are 5-2-0 or 6-2-0 depending on the product. The nitrogen is slow-release so that you don't have to fuss about burning the plants. Nitrate of Soda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_nitrate) is 16-0-0. The nitrogen is completely water-soluble and readily absorbed by plants. I believe that the growth you are seeing is from the Sodium nitrate, aided by the miloganite product. Potash is missing from your nutrients -- try to identify a source that is Nitrogen free.

Ahhh, where might I find potash? A feed mill maybe? I DOUBT I can find it at HD.
A farm supply store.
At the risk of being boring, I'll re-state that banana plant that is about a year away from fruiting (except the super-mini varieties) needs about 1.5 pounds of Potash in that year to produce a "commercial size" crop of fruit. :D
What you can make:
Corn-cob or Banana stalk ashes are 50% potassium by weight. You'll need 3 pounds of it per year.
Fireplace ash is about 5% Potash, unless it was green, unleached wood. You'll need about 1.5 lb / 5% = 30 lbs of it over the course of one year!
What you can buy:
Sul-Po-Mag is 22% Potash. You'll need 1.5 lbs / 0.22 ~= 6.8 lbs per year, which is actually a small amount. It is sold in 50 lb bags for about $20.
Grow More Inc. makes a water soluble 0-0-20. You'll need 1.5 lbs / 0.20 ~= 7.5 lbs per year. Depending on your source, a 25 lb bag sells for $25 to $50.
If you're going to buy the Grow More, you might as well buy the 20-5-30 water soluble instead and use it as your only fertilizer, excepting mulch, compost, and perhaps some kelp extract every other year.

Don't get me wrong, I've always fertilize, well....every once in a while with miracle grow. But never regularly like I've done since coming here to this site and growing bananas!! Heck I've even started composting, and last fall I got horse and goat manure for my nannas to add to the compost pile! :goteam:
I've learned alot from this site!
And one thing I learned is if 1 person ask the question, somebody else was wondering about that same question.
Now Tomorrow I have to go and find my babies some potash!

The most widely grown of all the species of Annona, the sugar apple, A. squamosa L.
Sugar Apple (http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/sugar_apple.html)
Origin and Distribution
The original home of the sugar apple is unknown. It is commonly cultivated in tropical South America, not often in Central America, very frequently in southern Mexico, the West Indies, Bahamas and Bermuda, and occasionally in southern Florida. In Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Barbados, and in dry regions of North Queensland, Australia, it has escaped from cultivation and is found wild in pastures, forests and along roadsides.
The Spaniards probably carried seeds from the New World to the Philippines and the Portuguese are assumed to have introduced the sugar apple to southern India before 1590. It was growing in Indonesia early in the 17 th century and has been widely adopted in southern China, Queensland, Australia, Polynesia, Hawaii, tropical Africa, Egypt and the lowlands of Palestine. Cultivation is most extensive in India where the tree is also very common as an escape and the fruit exceedingly popular and abundant in markets. The sugar apple is one of the most important fruits in the interior of Brazil and is conspicuous in the markets of Bahia.

At the risk of being boring, I'll re-state that banana plant that is about a year away from fruiting (except the super-mini varieties) needs about 1.5 pounds of Potash in that year to produce a "commercial size" crop of fruit. :D
What you can make:
[LIST]
Corn-cob or Banana stalk ashes are 50% potassium by weight. You'll need 3 pounds of it per year.
How does one make go about making ash from banana stalks?

How does one make go about making ash from banana stalks?
One of my neighbors does the following:
Downed fronds and stalks are collected before rain or water can leach minerals out of the drying material.
These are cut into roughly 16 inch sections using a 7" power hand saw, then thrown into a bin in the shed.
When the bin is full they are burned in an outdoor fire pit. The fire is started with charcoal and hardwood.
A few days later the ashes are shoveled into another bin.
Three or 4 times a year he gives each of his 3 pit fruit trees a large coffee can full of it.
Yup, they put out a couple hundred pounds of fruit each year.
For nitrogen, I believe he just throws some lawn fertilizer on them a few times per year when he is feeding his lawn.
