To make a long story short the home builders have a extra palm tree laying around above the dirt. It still has alot of green on it and looks fine. But it has seen several 30 -27 degree temps. They said I can have and but I have to wait for a guy to bring it too me. Now I never wrapped it as its not my property to be messing with. So figured someone would remove the wrap or it would spark interest and someone else would take it. Tree is worth $300.00 if you would buy it somewhere. Anyhow what are the chances its going to survive much longer with any low temps like that? It still has some dirt and looks like burlap under the dirt around the roots.

What kind of a palm is it, Jeff? If it's a windmill, you treat it like a tree; pull the roots apart and water it in well. If it's a palmetto, you'll have to chop the roots off on all four sides and remove most of the leaves (I know you've seen them laying on the sidewalk like that by the beach), put it in and stake it for two seasons. If it is a windmill, remember that it is a cold hardy palm; do not trim the branches off to make it look tropical! If it's a European fan palm, treat it like a windmill. If you're unsure, post a pic and I'll try and ID it for ya.

Hey man. I know alittle about palms. It's a palmetto, but talked to a guy that has been planting them for 25 years. He said if it sat out with roots exposed to 30 degree temps several times. Then it's not worth the money to install a free tree. I showed him pics as he is local.
Yes I have several windmill, had two large fan palms we moved with us during a rough winter to our new house. But they died. Will just be buying a 12ft from a local nursery here in a few weeks. It's a shame the builders let this huge 12ft tree just die. They could have atleast sold it to someone or posted it for free. I could have had it moved for $150.00 and placed in a hole I dug. But glad the guy was honest with me that it wasn't going to make it.
