I thought I would share some of the odd forms of Siam Ruby I have been finding out of the few hundered maybe thousand I have grown out. :07: :2710: :sumbrero: :simpatica :jedinaner:

The first photo shows the most common and oraginal form.

The second photo shows the odd lime yellow form I found around 40 out of all the forms I have grown
The third photo shows the variegated red and yellow form I found around 15 out of all the forms I have grown
The forth form is a odd one with streaks of red on a lime leaf I found two like this out of all I have grown
The last form is a almost pure red form. I have only found one like this out of all the ones I have been growing

Will pups of the #3 plant look the same way as the parent? or will they revert back to the regular Siam Ruby form? #3 would be a great seller if it can be reproduced reliably. I'd sure get one!

Great pictures Brian, thank you for all of your hard work over the past several months!!

In a way I am glad their are some differences it give a little more interest to it. But it has caused a lot of headachs when shipping them out and people getting green ones instead.

I have grown all forms to 1 to 2 feet tall and I am not completely sure if they will stay but I have yet to see any revert back to regular form. I am guessing some can sport off at the base as well.

That red form is probably the hardest to find.:nanertank: :moonwalknaner:

I am really jealous of all of you having such a nice colored banana.

The form 1 and 3 and of course de RED one are in my opinion the nicest.

Kylie2x yours is really nice กก

BTW does somebody from this side of the Atlantic (EU) :islandsharkbanana: have got any of this incredible beautiful bananas?

Although I have not ordered it, thank you Brian for bringing to the banana's community such incredible plants กกก :goteam:

I know it is probably to early to know it, but is there any experience regarding it cold hardiness? :coldbanana:

Beauties all, Brian!

Question:

I have, so far, Ruby Forms #1 & #2 - not sure yet what form #3 is going to end up. With the range that I've ended up being lucky enough to get, wouldn't it be more likely that the stragglers that came up are (delayed?) clone seedlings? If not, then pups are sure to be an endless source of entertainment - since each has been so different from the original received (form #1). This has been the coolest buy I've been involved in for a long time, as well as the most interesting to follow up on!

I'm befuddled (not hard to do, btw!).

Does this mean that the pup coming up could be something different than the mother plant??? It is small and green....

Kylie

That's what I'm trying to figure out, Kylie.

I'm trying to borrow a camera this weekend to get some detail pics up ... maybe that would help to show what I'm asking about. So far, I've got the original Siam & 2 pups (or ?}. One of the small ones is big enough to say w/surety it's a greenie. The other small pup is a red, but w/the green stripes. It's the smallest, & still might not be showing it's final form though.

If they are pups, I'd leave them w/the original to get the corm/growth. I'm just not sure if that's the best option if they turn out to be separate (delayed) clones? If that were to be the case, I'd think that separating them while small enough to differentiate the root systems from each other would be better?

I dunno - ideas, opinions, experience would be most welcomed here!

I'm trying to get hold of a cousin that is in No.Cal. & has done a lotta cloning, albeit with carnivorous plants. Hopefully Craig can shed some light on clone development, & whether clones can have a lag rate. I hope!

Their is a good chance what you have around the base are different clones of Siam Ruby. The reason for this was the first batch or two were pushed pretty hard and fast. They told me when they shipped it to me that most had a few plants in each cell tray. In some cases their were 8 or so plants in one small cell growing in a clump. Most the ones I shipped out had a pup and most after growing them out have shown to be different forms. I think most forms will be true to what you see after they get a few feet tall. They may throw out these other odd forms like I have found but it will most likely be years before most bananas will if ever produce them.

With TC you get around 100 to a few 1000 years of propagation in one season so what forms you may have hand selected out if you were propagating them by cuttings you see in just one years time. I remember they had produced a caladium Thailand Beauty. One nursery was getting thousands of plants and it seems they were be propagated hard by the TC lab. Their were tons of odd forms they had pulled that looked nothing like the original plant.
I am not sure what they call this process or problem. If you TC the same plant over and over and over you get some copys that dont look much like the mother plant. Then again you also get mutations in plants much like you see if you propagate something over and over again you will find some odd mutated forms that don't match the original plant.

TY, Brian!

When you have a chance, please - 2 questions:

1.
Would you advise separating them or giving it a hold & wait, given the probability of them being clones? If they were/are growing in a clump, I'm not too sure how possible or feasible separating them would prove to be. It wouldn't be something to fuss about so much if the little ones coming up were the same as 'mama', but there's 2 & possibly 3 forms in that pot. I want to try to give each the best chances possible to grow on & thrive, so that's why I'm on about whether they should each have their own space/pot.

2.
Do you know if it's common for cloned plants to 'emerge' weeks/months apart like the timing of some of these? (ie Kylie, myself & the others)

I'm tickled pink to watch the process, but I DO get mired in details - both a shortcoming & a plus at times!

Now if I could find my glasses so I can see how to work the dang camera that I borrowed ... THAT would be a plus!

Diana

btw - The Siam has converted my daughter to venture out to the garden, thankyouverymuch! She lurves seeing the daily changes to the Ruby & has taken to watering, petting & whispering sweet words of encouragement to it! She has NEVER shown interest in my plant addiction & I'm sooooo stoked to see it!

Diana... I'll come help you find the glasses...LOL I want to see some pic's ..I think it would be cool for mine to produce red pups. BUT I am very excited about the possibility of having something different as well.. I think all of the forms are beautiful... Could a green pup eventually produce a red or one of the other forms??? I find this all very exciting...

I would not suggest seperating them until they are a decent size usually 1 foot tall or more. They should be fine growing in a clump till then. Pluse if your in a colder state it is always best to wait till spring to start seperating plants like this.
I have found with most TC things that if you get a few plants fairly fast out of one plant it is probably seperate clones. In most cases when recieving plants they always seem to have just one small plant per cell. But in some cases were they are pushing them hard you get tons of small ones. I have some photos of some growing in clumps that were all from one cell and their seems to be a few different forms.

Okay, Kylie - I didn't find my glasses, but I did keep pushing buttons 'till I finally got some pics. Poor quality & the color sucks, but they work to show the differences between the 3 plants (I hope!). I gotta go read up on how to upload, but I'll get 'em up today one way or another! And you're so right - they are ALL beauties, & it's very exciting to see!

Thanks for the tip, Brian - I'll do that & keep 'em in the pot together for now. The pot is big enough for me to sit my rather prodigious butt in it, so there's room for 3 for awhile! May I tell you again just how pleased & grateful I am for your help & generosity? This project is the most fun I've had in a good, long while (& the kiddoes are all puffed up w/pride that Mom is sooo happy w/their Xmas present!). So TY,TY,TY, Thank you!

The same caterpillars that munch my Stuttgarts have apparently developed a taste for the Ruby ... buggers!

Doused w/the same bt spray I use on the cannas, & it worked. But the swiss cheese look on the affected leaves doesn't add to the beauty of the plants, that's for sure! Thank Fred the leaves grow so fast - they're looking better already.

I'm expecting the mites this winter, so that's an excellent question! I'm in 'stock-up' mode.

Out of five pups on my Siam, only one seems to be a little different. It has a deeper burgundy color. The mother plant started to put out leaves with solid green sections on them, then after three leaves went back to normal. I just looked at it and the next leaf appears to have another solid green section on it,(not unfurled yet). Ah... the mysteries of Siam Ruby. No matter what form, they are gorgeous plants to look at!!!

Brian you are absolutly right.. Every form is beautiful.. One thing that really kind of amazes me is the stability of the SR.. Here it has tolerated extreme heat and humidity and incredibly dry air and hasn't even drooped...I thought it would be a little more needy than it is..The growth rate has been average to above average. It's beauty aside I think it is a very user friendly plant..A wonderful addition here for me..

Gave away the mother and the tallest pup to a friend yesterday, they look much better in his backyard. Kept two small pups, planted one and will give the other to another gardening buddy. While separating the pups, noticed that even the mother plant, which was at 3' of psuedostem had very little corm! We had to stake and tie the mother to keep it upright. I didn't bring my camera to his house, what a shame, he has such a beautiful yard. Will take pics. of his adopted Ruby's at another time. These are what I kept.
