Can anyone tell me the taste/quality difference between some of the more readily available plantains varieties? In my time on this forum I haven't seen anyone go into detail on this topic. Usually someone says "good" and leaves it at that which to me is almost the same as saying "edible". Call me a snob but I don't find that very useful.

I have thought about growing a plantain, but if there isn't much difference than what I can get at the grocery store, then I might not bother.

Thanks.

I planted and harvested Maricongo years ago. Didn't care for the flavor much. Tossed the mat.

Now I planted in the same location 2 ARH --- one from Keith in PR and one from Lowes. Should fruit in 2015. Tostonees time!

That's great. Looking forward to everyone's taste reports.

I am a terrible judge, but I do grow a bunch of plantains. I use the dwarf plantains for just about everything. To me the tall ones taste exactly the same. The french plantains seem a little starchier. My Haitian customers seem to really like the french plantains, and they mostly boil them. The rhino horns I like to use for maduros. They also peel easily so they are a little more user friendly than a typical plantain.

Thank you Nick, that's very helpful. I think a Rhino Horn or something similar would be up my alley. I'm definitely a maduros fan.

is there such thing as an apple-flavor plantain?
