Englewood, FL. No fruit so far. Dwarf Cavendish ...2 yrs went no where. Replaced with another. Can't remember what. Dug out 3' wide, or so, pit. Filled with mostly compost etc. Was thinking a problem with the soil. Nursery said trickle water system would be adequate. maybe not ? We're here about Nov to May. Orange & grapefruit trees dying too. Ore Negro Avocado 2nd yr, at least got 3 fruit. Ideas?
Thx...

No comment on your soil and watering recipe, but on being a snowbird I have a little experience. I think the missing ingredient is a helper, both while you are there, and especially while you are gone. As a college kid I was a live-in gardener for a while, and later helped other people with their gardens while they were away. And now as a snowbird myself I have gotten great help that makes a huge difference in keeping plants alive. There is an old expression about the best thing for a plant is the sound of the gardener's footsteps. I've had best luck with someone who lives in the house, or right next door so that it is convenient to look after the plants.

if you could get some pictures of the plants as well as the soil but I doubt it is the soil I know the soil in and around that area very well I lived in el jellybean for 25 years as us locals call it aka el jobean and my grand parents lived in boca grande for 75 years. hope you get in some fishing in while your down for the winter. God has blessed them waters with some beautiful snooks and reds and snapper. About the time you leave to go back up north is the same time it's getting hot and very dry sometimes the rainy season don't always kick in on time and waits till the 3rd or 4th week of June to get going good therefore you plant could be dying from to much stress or lack of water. I would love to help you but to be honest without some more proof of details kinda just a guessing game as to what is going on there with your plants.............please keep us updated and if we can't help you can call your local extension office @(941) 861-9900 and they would be more than happy to help you isolate your problem always free of charge...

Thanks guys.
Yes, know I need someone to chk more often. My son lives near but can't chk enough.
Right Kubali. Not much info to go on. Will see if can get a couple pics on soon. Don't know how much water is too much or too little. Think it's called micro sprinkler with a small plastic line coiled around the tree base. That's what I hooked up before we went north year before last. It's on a timer.
We're on a small canal and a local nursery woman said her dad had trouble with growing what they planted, can't remember what it was, but they had to dig it up and put different soil in. This was on the bank of the canal that was dug.

You could try to plant your "valuables" in your sons yard and have him take care of them.
