Artichokes (Cynara cardunculus (http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?12839)) grow well here. If you are a few miles inland then planting them next to a west-facing structure will help avoid destruction from heat during the summer. Artichokes are in the Aster family, which among other things contains lettuce. Among species in the genus Cynara, there is only one other species I know of that is cultivated: the Dwarf Artichoke (Cynara humilis (http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?12840)). I've yet to find a good source for it.

After reading this:
Cynara - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynara)
I see why you wont buy seeds.

The plant here is a version of F1 Hybrid Imperial Star designed for the west coast. I bought seeds for it a few years ago. It propagates asexually with "slips" (pups) near the base. The plant shown here is 3rd or 4th generation from the original seedlings.

Looks like next week I'll have artichokes on the menu.

I have 7 seedlings potted up. I have more seeds to try. Someday, maybe I'll harvest some.
BTW, butter's on sale at Aldi this week.

Just transplanted the tubers from a 25-gallon pot into their new home ...
