What is meant by "synthetic hybrid" ?
It signifies that the banana in this Taste Report is a "synthetic hybrid". Since there are very few edible natural hybrids, it seems that term applies to just about every edible variety members here are growing.

Banana Breeding Programs use the term "synthetic hybrid" for the banana cultivars they develop.
Synthetic Hybrid - FHIA-25 - Breeder's code: SH-3775 (http://www.musagenomics.org/free_text_search/?cx=016697108779861396524%3Afdhayh8_jza&cof=FORID%3A10&ie=UTF-8&q=Synthetic+Hybrid+FHIA-25&siteurl=www.musagenomics.org%2Ffree_text_search.html%3Fcx%3D0166 97108779861396524%253Aaxahamgkht0%26cof%3DFORID%253A11%26id%3D13 45%26q%3Dlacatan%26sa.x%3D0%26sa.y%3D0&ref=www.musagenomics.org%2F&ss=12833j24130527j18&searchsite=all)

I guess I get where they were going with this term, "synthetic hybrid", in that they have tried to synthesize a suite of desirable traits (e.g., disease resistance, productivity, etc.) into a single cultivar, but it is kind of a strange term, in that it seems to only be used for man-made banana hybrids and not other food crops (that I'm aware of).
Anyway, I've been enjoying the synthetic hybrid FHIA-18 fruit I've been eating for the last week. It's a quality cultivar, at least for my tastes. I still slightly prefer my "non-synthetic hybrid" :ha:, Dwarf Brazilian (FHIA-18's mom) to it, but the taste is pretty similar to me.

Synthetic hybrid as in GMO?
No, traditional breeding. Pollen from one plant transferred to a different variety.
