Bananas on the Big Island are $1 or so at most farmer's markets. I charge $1.25-1.75 depending on type. Local stores sell for $1.69, sometimes $1.29 on sale at the larger supermarkets. Most bananas sold in Hawaii are imported, which explains the high prices.

I only buy bananas once in a blue moon because Chiquitas don't inspire me and they have to be very unripe or I can't eat them but I refuse to pay more than 55 cents a pound for them no matter where I live. Okay, that's wrong, I've paid $1.29/lb for little ones just so I could taste them. Plantains I purchase 5 for $1.00. So strange to me that bananas are imported to Hawaii.
