I have several bananas in the ground. When I planted them I created a oil pan sized moat by planting them a little deeper and filling the soil level 3 inches below the grade. Now its getting little chilly in California and im wondering about mulching the bases. Will compost work ? I ask because I need a few yards to fill a raised garden bed. If not, whats the best insulating product to protect the rootstocks ???

What you did is interesting, but cold and wet are not a good combination for banana corms.

I don't have to deal with the cold, but excess moisture can be a problem for my bananas and it seems like our solutions to deal with the issue is very different.

I plant the corm in a mound of well draining course sand so the corm can stay happy & dry and keep the "compost filled moat" a few feet away so the roots can easily find it.
