I am on vacation now in my very own country and waiting for the sun to
drink a rumb-cola.

Great pics. You have done a wonderful job with things. Where did you get the Manihot?

GaTroops,
I got the Manihot from a gentleman that got me started with palms/nanners/ee's... He lives in Athens, TN. Goes by the name of Will T. Don't know if you know him or not, but has some great specimen plants...

Great pics Randy. I'm growing the black ee for the first time. I know I will have to dig them up this winter. Should I keep them in pot for the winter or store them just like a bulb. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mudcat,
This is the 1st year I have had them outside. I will try and leave them and see if they come back or not... They are pretty hary from my understanding. I do have 3-4" of mulch covering all my beds, so this will hopefully help...
I actually purchased them last fall when they were practically giving them away... I left them in their pot and stored them in my unheated garage... I don't know how they would do storing them like a bulb. If you pot them up for the winter, just be sure to not water them hardly at all (if any). Good luck and hope you have sucess with them... I really like EE's!!!!

Nice pics Randy, I wish more members would post pics of their yards, naners etc. You never know what you might see and just have to have! On second thought, ...... .

Thanks, Nanaman...
I don't see many members posting overall yard pics either, so I was kinda hesitant to do it, but I decided to give it a try... Most of the time, I only see pics of individual banana plants, which is great, but I too, like to see others nanners incorporated into their surroundings... Who knows, maybe more will start doing the same... BTW, is there something you saw I had growing that you might be interested in? If so, e-mail me and I'll see what I can do for ya if anything...
Thanks again for the compliments....

Randy thanks for the info. I will probably go with potting them up for the winter. I had previously bought ( at 4 different times) bare root tubers and failed. I finally found one at HD. It was about 12in, so hopefully I will have better luck with them this time.
Thanks again,

Randy, the reason I don't post overall yard pics anymore is because of people like you! Your yard absolutely just puts mine to shame. You really have done a great job with it, and are to be commended. I've been just digging a hole here and there and sticking something in it. I'm waiting on a dumptruck load of topsoil to start creating some raised beds. My soil is just too pitiful to grow a lot of the things (bananas) that I like to grow. It's great for Trachys though, rhododendrons and azaleas, bluberries, hydrangeas, and other acid-loving plants. Different parts of the yard support bananas better than others also. My front bed doesn't support anything very well except my Trachys. My pathectic Hedychium coronarium is only about 1 foot tall in that bed, and last year I had a Musella lasiocarpa completely stall out in that bed. EEs did ok though. Ummm...am I dragging on here??
Well, nice job anyhows! Gotta get down there soon.

I would like to see a sticky thread dedicated to members yard photos(voluntary of course)! That way you get to see stuff that you might not have thought to plant yourself, or don't want to grow for whatever reason, or does not grow well in your particular zone. Also it would be a cool way to document the changes that your yard has undergone, and may give others ideas that they hadn't thought of. Who cares if your yard is incomplete,or whatever,I'm sure other banana members would love to see it! Besides, who else but other banana enthusiasts, can appreciate the efforts that have gone into it. l wish I had documented the progression of mine so far! I'm only interested in growing edible desert bananas, pineapples, tropical clumping bamboo, and a few tomatoes now and then so my yard might be boring to some, but it's paradise to me! I'll post some pics soon.

What do you do with the palms during winter? Wrap them in plastic?
Randy4ut
07-09-2007, 08:28 AM
modenacart,
The only palm that I have to really worry about is the Queen palm in a large nursery pot... It spent last winter inside my unheated garage... The others will be fine until temps get lower teens or colder... I will then wrap with mini Christmas lights and wrap with frost cloth... I haven't had to do that so far, since this is just my 3rd year with the palms, but I have everything in place to do so if need be...

It is indeed a great place to share our obsession, but I only grow one type of banana. I am sure my wife and many friends would say that I am a obsessive gardener. At one time I had 16 different bananas. When a problem with rhizome bores infested the bananas I removed all but one variety. That one variety satisfies me enough. I have a few orchids, fruit trees, flowering trees, and palms that I post on my web site. I have too many pictures for this thread. If you want to see my garden go to my site: http://togofcoralgables.com/default.aspx
I have some progression pictures in albums banana, amorphophalus, and blood lily. For anyone who wants to see only the bananas go to: http://togofcoralgables.com/AeAebananas.aspx

jnstropic,
Thanks so much for sharing your website... You have one extensive website with some of the most beautiful plants I have ever seen... Even though you only grow one variety of banana, you have indeed pic the creme-del-la-creme!!! Shame you only sell to growers... Thanks again for the link... I will indeed visit again...:2691:

Tangy,
Thanks for the kind words... As far as the castors go, from my understanding, there are two types, the green and maroon... This plant is very easy to grow from seed and the two in the pics were started indoors in February of this year and planted outside about the middle of May. They were about 12" tall when I planted outside... I am harvesting a few of the seed stalks this fall, and if you are interested, I will be more than happy to send you some... I will post a thread when they are ready....
Thanks again for your compliments...

^^^^ Thanks for the offer and I may have to accept!
You may know this but I wanted to let you know to use some caution while handling those seeds.
It turns out a plant given to us by my beloved mother in law is slightly poisonous. Anyways while tooling this page of toxic plants I came across the castor bean page with the following caution:
Scientific Name
Ricinus communis
Common Name
Castor bean, castor-oil plant
HIGHLY TOXIC, MAY BE FATAL IF EATEN! SKIN IRRITATION SEVERE!
Characteristics
Family
Euphorbiaceae
Plant Description
Shrublike, annual herb with red-purplish stems; leaves large, alternate, simple, round in outline but deeply and palmately 6-11 lobed; flowers small and whitish; fruit a large, red, prickly capsule with slightly flattened seeds which are mottled brown-gray-white.
Origin
Asia and Africa.
Where Found
Landscape as cultivated, annual herbaceous ornamental.
Mode
Ingestion and allergic reaction after skin contact with seeds.
Poisonous Part
Broken seeds.
Symptoms
Immediate or delayed nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, depression, trembling, sweating, convulsions, coma; may be fatal. Severe allergic reaction in certain individuals following skin contact with broken seeds.
Toxic Principle
Ricin, a phytotoxalbumin, plus ricinine, an alkaloid.
Severity
HIGHLY TOXIC, MAY BE FATAL IF EATEN! SKIN IRRITATION SEVERE!
You very well may know this but IMO better safe than sorry!

You may recall that a few years ago some terrorist groups were found to be concentrating ricin from castor bean to use in their plots .

Ricin is the only thing I know of in it that can be dangerous. The maroon type comes up volunteer in our garden every year, I handle those seeds every year and sell them (like on this site last year) and I have never had any problems. I even stuck one in my mouth on accident  NOT a suicide attempt. I almost want to transplant a small one into the Banana area just for a change of scenery.
