View Full Version : Blue Java Journal
I received my blue java/ice cream pup and fruit from crazy banana last night. I was like a kid in Christmas morning opening presents :ha:

The smell of the fruit is intensive! But it is not ready. I pot it up in a mix of potting soil with worm castings and drink of rain water.

I will keep up posted how its doing in a couple of weeks.
Special thanks to Crazy Banana!:birthdaynana:

Congratulations on your new plant. I hope it will grow and fruit fast for you. Put it in the shade with very little water (if at all) until you see new growth. The roots were dusted with mycorrhizae, so you should see some new growth quick.
Fruit: keep in mind that it is a fruit from the "casualty bunch" which was not fully developed or ripe yet with only hanging for three month even though it is one of the fatter ones.
However, I have put about 10 of my bananas in a paper bag with some overripe apples and happily noticed the first color changes already. We will have to see.
Give it time to change color completely to yellow. It is not the yellow of a supermarket Cavendish. It is a pale yellow, still with the silverish coating. The fruit should be super soft to the touch to enjoy its creamy custardy flavor, but again: it was not meant to be harvested yet and I do not know if we will be able to enjoy its full flavor like it could have been without that darn storm.

Here is an update on the Blue Java.

It hasn't grown much but we are in winter still. It got down to the 20s in December and January but it made it thru. Just some damage on the leaves.
I thinking of getting it on a big pot or putting in the ground. What do you think is the best?
Thanks

Congratulations, a very beautiful plant
Here is an update!
The blue java was getting too big for the pot. So I put it in the ground in mid May. It kind of slowed down on growth with the big change and it was raining allot during April and May here in South Texas. I planted it next to my fence. I mixed in some homemade and store bought compost when I put it in the ground. My soil is made up of heavy clay. It gets sun around 11 am till around 3 and again late in the afternoon. About 5 or so hours of sunlight. I need to trim a big tree that is in front of it, so that it can get more sun.

Now, it has all summer and fall to grow.
I will post an update in July to see how much it grew.:birthdaynana:

Nice job. It will be so much happier now.
Time for an update on the blue java. I can see a big growth even though we didn't much rain in past 2 months and its been really hot.

I haven't feed it, just rain water (which I had saved on 300 gallon tank but it's almost gone.) I guess the compost I gave it when I put in the ground is working. Should I feed it again before winter(late November) hits?

A balanced fertilizer (2:1:3) would certainly not hurt it. You have three more month of growth to get out of it.
Here is another photo of my blue java. This time it has double it's size in 2 1/2 months. Compare to the last pic I posted, its a big difference!

What is the best fertilizer to use for the Blue Java?

I just buy cow manure for Home Depot mixed with homemade compost and worm castings. Every now and then I give it some homemade compost tea.
Here is a pic for January.

Some new growth, not as much but the winter has been really mild down here. The coldest it has been is in the high 30s just for a couple of hours in December. Most of the time, its been in the 70s and 60s.
Here are pics of the 2 pup that currently growing!! I am so excited about these 2 new additions.

If your winter continues to stay mild like that you could be seeing a bloom in the spring.
WOW!!! I haven't kept up this journal. hahaha. There was not much activity. It kind of slow down and it has 3 pups. BUT I did have a big surprise yesterday!!
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=60223&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=60223&ppuser=16687)
BANG!!
I need to retake this picture. I am working long hours and by the time I get home, the sun is already setting. Maybe this weekend I will take a close picture and better lighting.
Out of nowhere. I didn't even see the flag leaf. This area is windy as you can tell by the leaves, so I didn't notice the flag leaf.
I am excited!!!:birthdaynana::nanadrink::woohoonaner::goteam::0517:

Hey CB, was wondering if you could share your opinions on how Blue Java bananas taste. I realize it's purely subjective, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts.
Thanks!

Well, let's say it this way, I have had some really good Blue Java bananas which were filled in very well and ripened on the plant, while I had some that were not worth the time and water I had spent on growing them (tough in the center). In my opinion none of them had the often described vanilla taste, but a really nice one can have the ice cream custard texture.
Overall, the ones I have had were not consistent, but if harvested at the right time, I like them a lot.
:(sorry to report but the banana plant fell down. I guess a gust of wind knock it down. I woke up yesterday morning and as usually did my rounds of checking all my plants and trees. And then I saw the whole plant on the ground.
The fruit was still too small. It was starting to fill in. So there was no way of saving it. By the afternoon, the fruit was turning black.

Wow, that's horrible. I was really enjoying the updates, and was waiting for a happy ending.
Was there any indication it may tip? Surprising it would just keel over without excessive wind/rain.
Well it is not over yet, just a set back. It has 2 daughter pups. Hopefully next year it will be ready for another bunch. I am thinking of separating the 2 remaining plants. I might move one them to the front of the house. Less wind and better production.
It was leaning towards the side it fell too. I was thinking of putting some support but I would imagine later since the fruit was not that big. I will post pics of the tragedy.

NO!!!! So sorry to hear.
Blue Java is a leaner in general and should be propped with a fruit bunch.

well next year you will have more pups. you can make your farm a little larger, looks like have the room. you can sit on the couch and avoid problems or you can roll up your sleeves and learn from them.
I have some what of a large backyard. I also have a manzano(which is about to flower as well), and Orinoco. A couple of citrus and avocado trees. I might add more to my collection next year.
