View Full Version : Dwarf Namwah oddly tall this year

My Dwarf Namwahs have been getting taller over the last 2 years. In the past they have been on average 7ft tall when they flowered. This year, one of my 9 month old plants is already 14.5' tall.
Does anyone know what could have caused this and what affect this may have on my fruit this year?
This year:

It is normal that the second or third generation follower pups are taller than the original plant.
When you planted your original plant, a lot of energy went into establishing a good sized corm which now sends out the nice size follower pups.

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense.

wow yours really does look like my namwah, but mine isn't getting taller this year. Probably because it's in a very large pot.

This thing is continuing to grow but still no flag leaf. Just thought I would share some more photos.

Another update. The base is now at 80in and has begun to split.

I would not look at the base for a possible inflorescence. The bunching of the leaves on the top of your earlier pictures are a better indicator for a soon to be expected bloom.
Looking good!

Update.
Flower pushed through about a week ago. It is huge. Maybe twice as big as last year.

Looks like I will be doubling last year's yield with 13 hands.

Wow, 80" that's more than a 25" diameter... Amazing.
Can you take a wider photo of the base.
Thanks for the great posts.
BTW, normally measurements are taken at the height of 1 meter.

So the measurement should be taken when the plant reached 1 meter and taken at the base correct?

This picture is what I am calling "eye candy".
Nice. Namwah (dwarf and tall) are usually very prolific, but it seems that this year quite a few people are lining up for the title "King/Queen of Namwah". You are one of them.
Do not forget to weigh the bunch when ready and to count the fingers.

It's not Dwarf Namwah. It's tall Namwah ("fake Ice Cream"). The height, plant shape (not broad enough at the top of the p-stem), and the clean rachis distinguish it from Dwarf Namwah.

This may be a dumb question but, is it possible they mutated? They didn't start growing to this size until shortly after I planted the tall Namwah on the other side of the yard.

It's not a dumb question. Many of varieties of bananas are somatic mutants. As I understand it, all the varieties within a subgroup (e.g., all Cavendish varieties) are somatic mutants of an original variety. As a specific example, Williams was a somatic mutant that showed up in a field of Dwarf Cavendish.
That said, height is not a definitive trait of dwarfism. Tall varieties can fruit at short heights under certain conditions (e.g., poor conditions or first fruiting on a mat). And, some non-dwarf varieties are short, e.g., Rose and some other AA genome cultivars.
Here are a couple of photos of real Dwarf Namwah plants. Note how stout the p-stem is and how there is very little space between the leaves.

Wow, thank you for posting these pics. I also wondered if I had dwarf namwah or not, but now I definitely can tell I have the tall variety. Mine have a lot more spacing between the leaves and not as stout of a trunk.

Would love for opinions.... Is this a regular (tall) Namwah? ....or Dw. Nam as I have understood? (started w/ 2 pups last summer).
For what it's worth, my son, in the pic is not even a 1/2" shy of 4 ft. tall and the fitted concrete border blocks/bricks are 12" long.
