the best thing to do is make sure the center of the top has new leafs in the center without the new leafs it will not grow, it will sit there and rot.my son works at winn Dixie and I got a bunch of tops and noticed it can have roots, but if it does not have new growth coming from the center it will not grow........something really important to look for too. I'm sure you will agree on that abnshrek

And you know the weird thing is I kinda think some people don't want you to be able to grow one free with out buying from some where. Reason I say that is I have found lots of the pineapples are missing new growth from the center like some1 has took all the new growth from the center and cut it out or something, and Publix ships all the pineapple to their stores for cutting into fruit cups and what not .cut all the tops off completely. But the ones they sell to customers have the centers sometimes......go figure.

I have had 2 that have regrown from center so I can not say that they can't, but having a Healthy new growth on the top is optimal.. :^)

Michael what I am talking about is have u noticed if it does not have new growth coming from inside the center of the top it will not grow, I am saying the new leafs coming from the very center of the top some I have got the center is just a blank hole....................where the new growth is not there at all is gone why I am not sure, I think it is something they do so u can't grow a free plant from the top....

I am going to have nightmares of someone w/ a filet knife cutting out top centers.. and they didn't sanitize the knife.. :^)

I visited the Finca Corsicana organic pineapple farm in Costa Rica, earlier this year. Excellent learning opportunity. I learned how to grow a pineapple crown, amongst other things...
One of the questions we were quizzed on was how to select the best pineapples in a grocery store, best from the perspective of eating. The usual answers (smells nice, nice sound, firm flesh, good top that doesn't lose leaves when tugged) were all wrong according to the guide.
IIRC, the best way is to look for even green coloration and even scale size and shape. We all got it wrong!
We were told that yellowing is a sign that the fruit has started to ferment.
An interesting observation is that this farm picked the pineapples at the peak of ripeness, and the fruits are shipped very cold (very close to freezing) from the factory. In Canada every pineapple I've seen on display has been out in the open, NOT in any refrigerated display case, and in many cases the crown has started to deteriorate, the base is often slightly moldy, and usually yellowing to some degree. Stores could easily increase the quality of the fruit just by keeping it refrigerated!
(The OP's photos look to be an excellent pineapple from a freshness perspective - excellent even *green* scales with a top that looks great.)
