A basjoo, with variegated shell ginger, to the left, and orange bird of paradise, at the right, and a pineapple in the foreground.

I've got one of those variegated shell gingers, but mine wont grow more than a few leaves at a time so is tiny and scruffy (slug bitten). Do you have any tips?

I really haven't had a slug problem on the gingers. I've had some slugs, but mainly on hostas and spathyphyllum. I sprinkle slug bait, and hand pick them when I see them. The gingers that I have are from either TC liners, or seeds that I have collected, in Orlando, Florida.
The one in the picture isn't the biggest one, but it's the only one I planted in the ground, as we have to take them inside for the winter.
Here's another picture of it.

My variegated ginger is only beautiful when it rains. If there is a bit of Sunshine all the leaves curl.

I paid some woman for one of those V. Shell Gingers and she sent me a leaf and stem in the mail, snapped in half. Oh what should I have expected from a stranger.
