I have and SDC in a 50 gallon pot that is almost 3 years old now it is about 3 feet tall but had some leafs die off during the winter which I cut off. The plant has not produced any new leafs like the rest of my bananas have and after cleaning up the dead leafs on the pseudostem I found a black area near the base of the pseudostem the was under a dead leaf. The area is not soft, but I am just worried because the growth has stopped and now more pups have come up. Thanks for any advice.

Anyone have any thoughts, are the leafs caught inside or is it dying. It has now put out 3 new pups. Thanks,

Is the yellowing on the edges of the leaves recent, do you give it enough phosphorus?

The yellowing came with winter because it does get to 50 or lower in my sun room in the winter when it freezes hard. The only thing I have given the bananas is water and I fertilize with banana fuel.

You say the area is not soft but it looks a bit sunken in in the photo? Does it smell rotted at all? I don't want you to cut into the pseudostem if you don't have to but if it were me I might try and nick a bit of that first black leaf layer back and see how far into the stem it goes, to let me know if it's rotting through or what, and if I need to cut it out/back :)

It still has not produced any new leafs but there is now a bulge Just above where the black was, I am curious if it has choked or is this the flower coming up. Should I cut right above the bulge or just leave it for a couple more weeks.

I will give it another week or so and see what happens. We are suppose to have a week of 80 degree weather this week maybe that will give it a push. If not surgery time.

Was the last leaf a flag leaf? It will have been smaller than the one before it if it was. Bananas will begin to bulge as the flower emerges because it is pushing the leaves slightly outward.
I would leave it be for a little bit.
If you are worried about that one leaf, you could x-acto knife it away probably.

Are you sure that is a 50gal container? What is its diameter. Pstem doesn't look fat enough to flower, and that spot does look sunken in and rotten. Please post a pic of the new bulge that is happening. Don't want to panic you but unfortunately it looks/sounds like that stem may be toast, hopefully some hot weather helped.

Well the cigar leaf that had not grown started to wilt but all the other leafs looked good so after getting back from vacation I operated. Sure enough there was three different leafs starting in the p-stem where the bulge was. One was dead and pulled out easily, the second was white and felt soft and the third one was green so I cut the p-stem all the way down to where it was pretty much just the green leaf and it has already started to grow again. I will grab some pictures tonight.

Same thing happened to a red banana I dug up and potted; stopped growing for a while then I noticed a dying growing leaf being pushed out the side by a completely new growing point that has since taken over.

Here are the pictures of the new leaf starting to grow out of the p-stem and one looking down on the p-stem. You can see the new leaf growing and one of the other leafs that was inside and the space at the new leaf is where the third leaf was.
