Hi all, My bananas that I left in the sunroom have started to take off now but they are having some really weird growth. The first leaf that came out was normal size but the second one was smaller and then the third leaf was even smaller. I will have to wait and see what the fourth leaf looks like. I didn't know if this was normal after a cold winter inside with no growth or if my bananas are just special. Here are some pictures.

Thanks in advance chris

I have this problem too. Honestly, I think that it is just some stress. Plus, i don't know about you, but here the temperature have remained on the low side and bananas don't like that. Things should solve by themselves as soon as temperature rises.

Sorry no helpful answer:{

Oddly enough the banana plants where I applied the "Let er rip" method of winter protection all died back but to seem to have come back really kickin:}

Here's my take.....for plants that have not been pushing leaves(actively growing) all winter
The first few leaves to push from the plants are "last years" leaves.The smaller newer ones are are the leaves that developed over winter during the slow/no growth period that are in line behind the "last years" growth.
And since they have developed under less than ideal conditions they will be smaller, once your growing season gets going they will sort themselves out.

Keep in mind that there is always a new leaf forming in the corm/pstem and just like birth when it's time it's time regardless of size. They can be a chunker or a preemie

Of course this is only my take, some of mine do it also when overwintered inside my home in containers under less than ideal conditions.
I will post pics once I see some.

Now That you put it like that it totally makes since and I just have to wait and be patient. We are in the middle of what is suppose to be a couple of really nice weeks for weather. I will post some more pictures when things change.

Thanks again Chris.

Also, take in account etiolation.Some plants make bigger and more watery cells when they are grown in a environment lacking of light. As you give them more light the tissues usually develop a more compact grow, which my be the cause of some smaller leaves (but here I'm just guessing).

They look great! And I'm thinking those bananas just adore being next to such a nice water supply as a lake right? (also are those real ducks? :D)

Your tomato looks really good too; I just threw down a few seeds myself a day or two ago, fingers crossed. Do you know what type it is or the age? :)

Bananas have really taken off now and I am into the 3rd or 4th new leaf and they are starting to go normal again. You could see some cold damage on the smaller leafs. That was interesting to watch and I will post photos in the next couple of days.

Are you referring to it being too hot or too cold for them in our region? I've only ever grow cherry tomatoes that I started in pots and those things grew for over 12 months, breezed through summer like nothing. I think they can take more of a beating than regular tomatoes.

I did sow some Pink Brandywine which are supposed to be a normal tomatoe-type huge variety so I might have to baby that one.

What sorts have you grown? :D

I am on the start of the fourth or fifth leaf and they are finally coming out looking normal again. With the prior leafs they were smaller odd shaped and some had cold damage on them. I am excited to see this years growth.
