View Full Version : Lost cause after the winter?

Hey everyone, I have a number of banana plants but last fall was the first time I tried keeping one dormant over the winter. I replanted it a few weeks ago but seems like it has not been doing so well. Where I had initially cut it down to didn't look too bad but I eventually decided to get down to the base and it wasn't looking too good. Just want to know if this nanner is a lost cause.

On the left is a moldy piece that was above the base to the right. I tried keeping it dark & dry over the winter but maybe it got a bit too much humidity. The base itself on the right looks okay at the moment. Anyway, is there any hope of recovering what's left?

What kind is it.. Your growing zone? and is there a closer more clear pic? This might help if you looked (http://www.bananas.org/f2/spring-trimming-what-look-20048.html) @ the 1st entry.. Looks like you pulled this out of the dirt. Did you see any eyes / growths forming a pup?

I answered this similar question last night..cut it down to bare corm and start over..for small corms I use a small sharp knife even a vegetable peeler..again watch water, heat humidity..

Hi Boognish, welcome to the forum.
There was a similar discussion yesterday here: Are my Basjoos dead? - Bananas.org (http://www.bananas.org/f15/my-basjoos-dead-20375-new-post.html).
The pictures submitted by the other poster were almost identical to yours.
Rather than repeating the whole discussion here, check out the above URL. Then, if you
still have any questions, by all means ask them here (or there).
For the future, if you want any replies, which make sense to your situation, please post,
where you hail from, or at least your hardiness zone at the side, where your particulars
are stated. Also supplying a first name (it does not have to be you real one) or a simple
handle to call you by, makes for a friendly atmosphere in our discussions.

Hello again everyone, I appreciate the replies and input. Sorry for not giving more information initially. It was supposedly a Blue Java, I got it off Ebay little over three years ago and it was doing great until now. Had it up to about 6ft in height, let it grow outside during the summer and brought it indoors for the first two winters allowing it grow under fluorescent lighting. This last fall I decided it was getting a bit too large to keep inside for the winter and tried following the "dormancy" tutorial in the cold hardy bananas section. I'm assuming the basement I kept it in was too humid, thus the rot.
Unfortunately, turns out it was a total loss. Luckily I have a few other smaller nanners (no clue what species, they were gifts) to tide me over until I can find another Blue Java. Anyone have any suggestions as to where I can get a hold of an actual Blue Java? Can I trust Ebay in regards to banana species? They've been pretty good with any other variety of plants I've ordered.
Thanks again! Will try to post here a bit more often, everyone seems very helpful and friendly.
Also, my name, location & zone should now be on the sidebar =)
