Was wondering if anyone has been by pirates voyage to see if their banana plants came back. Tried to figure out what they were last year when they were small swords coming up. So let me know what they are.

I live in Myrtle Beach about 15 mins from Pirates Voyage. I remember when it used to be called Dixie's Stampede. It has been a while since I have been there, but they just let the plant die back to the ground over the winter and it grows back no problem come spring. I just started growing bananas last year, and I dug it up and potted it for the winter in the garage. Hopefully I can get fruit this year starting with a six foot stem for this season!

No problem will do. Anyone know why I am seeing more red on the stem and under the midrib of new leaves? The plant has always been very green, I have never seen red coloring before. I tried posting a pic but it's not working maybe because I am on IPhone instead of computer. Stem is now almost 7 feet on ice cream banana, 9 ft with leaves.

Last year after they were fried from frost, no way to tell what they were. I called PV asked for landscapers number.Called the guy an he has no clue what the banana plants are! How can you plant something but not know what you planting on a commercial site. It's your job to know what your planting if your selling it.

Thanks! The nurseries around here rarely know the specifics of what banana they are selling. They are always just labeled banana plants, in fact, some aren't even aware there are different types!

That's sad. There is a cool nursery on the main drag down a neighborhood street. Forget the name but it's a wife an husband business. I bought a nice Musa GN there and a huge cold hardy cactus cheap. Have to check my wallet for the name. They have basjoo,Orinoco, cavendish, velutina, yellow,GN,ice cream.

No its true. What I mean is when pups emerge they have reddish to them and I have tons of Namwah thats the real deal as well and they look nothing alike.

Mine has a very slight hint of red under the midrib of the newest leaf and also very subtle red on the stems. For sure you would be able to tell once it fruits? I have heard namwah fruits at shorter height and tastes as good as ice cream, I wouldn't mind it being namwah if true!
