I didn't know it sucked.. I'd put some of that sweet fly killer into it and see if that does the trick.. I wouldn't do this if you have animals in the yard.. I don't even know why I suggested that other than it will kill pests.. :^)

you'll get better results with your second and third harvest. i only got a few my first year, but i have a lot this year.

the birds really target them around here. i pulled one of my plants into my screened porch and a cardinal managed to find it's way in through a small hole to steal one, all while his mate was playing lookout on the outside and waiting for some of the reward. the worst part about it was that i had to open the door for the little winged thief because he couldn't find his way out.

I didn't expect much this year.. Just trying to feed them for more down the road.. Your story is funny in a way, so I take it it's something you have to net.. I told the squeeze I was going to net the fruit trees, but she said I had to share.. I wonder if the story is going to change in relation to the Blue Berries.. I'm not the one going to tell her she has share, but I bet the look on her face would be priceless.. :^)

I had a Sunshine Blue Blueberry plant. I think my bamboo plant overgrew it and blocked out too much sun, killing it. I'd like to get another plant.

I have several varieties growing in my backyard, including 'Pink Lemonade'.
Question, how many plants do you have? For a good crop you should have at least two plants, preferably of different types.

"On a technical level, most blueberry plants are self-pollinating. This means that certain varieties have the ability to produce fruit with only one plant in the landscape. However, from a practical standpoint blueberries are cross-pollinators. This is because blueberries produce larger berries and a higher yield when cross-pollinated. If planting two different species is not an option, opt for two different cultivars of the same species. However, in order for the cross-pollination to be successful the two (or more) varieties must bloom at the same time. Always make sure that you have compatible bloom times before you plant to avoid future disappointment.

Give them time; it's sort of like my honeyberries (aka Haskap, aka ‘Blue Honeysuckle’), it took about 5 years for them to get big enough, but now the 4 plants are producing more berries than the two of us can use.....

But depending upon the type of blueberry you have, you'll have to wait a few years for a "respectable" harvest but I find they are always worth the wait......there's nothing like a handful of ripe berries picked fresh and eaten on the spot :)

Yes, I grow mine in straight pine bark. You will need to water more frequently, but blueberries thrive in the acidity.

pmurphy, you can grow haskaps in zone 8?? Its an interesting fruit, I never really hear of anyone else growing them. What varieties do you have? Which berries do you like best? People say 'Borealis' is the best but this will be my first year having multiple varieties flower, and so will be my first year tasting the fruits. I'm always excited to try a new fruit. Also got a pink lemonade blueberry this year so will be cool to see those next year.

Mulch
You can't have too much. I have 6" to 8" of decaying oak tree leaves year round and they love it. it also saves

Water
They like their roots moist NOT WET but moist and then they grow lots of them to collect

Fertilizer
Yep they like to eat too. Feed three year old plants about 3 ozs. of acid lovers fertilizer scattered under the canopy.

I have a good crop on this year and some are about ready to turn blue!!!!
