I was wondering who here has them growing, and how well do they grow?

I'm hoping someone on my plain (Longitude) is growing them so it might give me some insight.. Thanks :^)

I planted two vanilla vines last summer. They have not done much for me. Its probably not hot or humid enough for them where I live.

I have 3 potted vines growing up a shaded 6 ft fence until I figure out what to do with them. When the vine reaches the top I train it to grow back down - then let it grow up again naturally. My personal zig zag vines.:ha:

All you guys take heed ---I'm too far north to grow these reliably. Meaning, the first close touch of frost and they are history. Down in south south FL they plant them at the base of big trees so they can climb. They like shade. Then there is the long drying out period of the bean pods. Then you can scrape out the insides and enjoy one of the greatest flavors on the planet. Yum Yum!

Same same for piper nigrum --- I'd love to grow my own black pepper. Cook with it in lots of stuff.

Just got my pepper and artichoke seeds in the mail today from Reimer seeds. Have dealt with them before. They have a lot of not so common stuff. Check them out. Home - Reimer Seeds (http://www.reimerseeds.com/default.aspx)

That place has alot of cool Seeds.. I like the Tobacco section even though I don't think I'd grow any.. Its like a super-seed warehouse.. If my pepper seeds don't work I know where to get some.. :^)

I wouldn't count yourself out for growing any tropicals even if you live up north. I live in upstate NY, zone 6, and grow lemon, lime, banana, lemongrass, etc.

In regards to piper nigrum (black pepper), I grow it successfully indoors. I just take all my plants inside in the winter. Long story short: you can keep vanilla as a fruitful houseplant! You just have to believe!!!!!!!

If you want more info on growing tropical edibles indoors and outdoors in the summer, I would recommend: "How to Grow Tasty Tropical Plants... In Any Home, Anywhere" by the proprietors of Logee's Greenhouses. They sell tropicals out of New Hampshire. That is where I got my black pepper plant.

I have had mine growing for 2 years now..total is about 10 ft so far..if it were stretched out..i keep mine portable aswell..milk crate lined with weed block fabric..couple of 2 inch wood branches zip tied to the side..i use straight charcoal as media..it gets very early mourning and late afternoon sun but good shade during the rest of the day..i feed VERY lightly twice a week and water every day when its anywhere above 70.twice if I can when its up in the 90s

Just want to revive this thread. Does anyone have any updates on growing vanilla planifolia orchid successfully? Any recommendations on where to get a decent sized plant (not a TC)?
I am playing with the idea to get one.

I got some cuttings from floraexotica in Montréal and they grew pretty fast. I have two vanille orchids in my basement since almost a year now, without lights. I neglect them and they seem to like it. They doubled their size so far. Remember, they grow in the shadow of other trees in the tropical forests so they do not need that much light.

Did you ever get a source for the vanilla orchid?
I placed an order for a tc.
With any luck, I should be receiving a
musa velutina this week from FHN!:bananas_b

Vanilla planifolia tc from FHN
Spa soaking in fish emulsion fertilizer
before I plant it.:bananas_b

PS. Looks like a good start..
bcs it looks like an orchid!
Good thing it isnt another fakey musa.

PSS.The orchid does not have the watermelon
stripping that Abnshrek has but the leaf shape is similar.
According to google pics, not all Vps have the watermelon striping:

No. I never tried hard enough.
It was between Vanilla Orchid and pineapple. Now I have plenty of pineapples growing....
Maybe trying at a later point.
