This is fairly simple and I've already collected the photos, but have not gotten around to starting a thread. The first leaf after being separated is distinctively different and I am not referring to if it's also the very first leaf of the pup, that situation is different. The shades of new leaves changes over the first two weeks and being able to recognize those differences is helpful.

How cooked?
Mostly I just slice them about 1" thick, steam them, and serve with salt. My other standard is sautéing onions in coconut oil, then adding coconut milk and the steamed bananas. Other than that I add them to curries, stir fries, or make mashed bananas like mashed potatoes.

I never had a recipe that wasn't improved by substituting the cooking bananas with platanos.

I have some that haven't flowered yet. Had 2 African Rhino Horn (supposed to be anyway) that died. I have some local TC ones labeled "Giant Plantain" and recently bought a pup of Dwarf Puerto Rican Plantain, but these are all only 2-3 months along. Have bought some plantains to eat that are grown locally and they're very good, but no idea what type they are.

Rob --- have you ever made green bananas like they do in PR? Called Guineos en Escabeche. Basically peeled, split in half lengthwise and cut in pieces 3 inches or so. Simmered in water till tender. Sautee briefly --- sliced onions and chopped garlic in good olive oil. Add banana pieces and simmer to coat well. Place all in shallow bowl and sit at room temp for a few hours. Eat as side dish with dinner or lunch. So simple and soooooooooo good!
I will do this with my Ae Ae bunch when the next bunch is ready in the spring.

This has happened to me more times than I like to remember. Ae Ae are, for me, the most difficult and problematic banana to grow. The only treatment I have found that will work in your situation, is to clean off all of the rot with a knife. If there are any roots that are white, try to leave them on. Get your hands on some powdered sulfur. Completely cover the corm with the sulfur and set the corm on a shelf and keep it dry. Don't try to replant it for a week. If you need to change out the sulfur, do so, and re-coat the corm again. Plant the corm in dry potting mix. Don't water. Put the pot on concrete in the sun so that the bottom of the pot gets good heat. Don't water for a good week or so and keep it out of the rain during this time. After a week, slightly wet the soil, and keep it in the sun. If you are lucky, and it's a big if, you will get a new shoot coming off the corm. Don't water much until the corm sprouts roots. Good Luck.

Very sad day today for me, my AeAe is dying had been doing real good pushing up a new leaf every other week. but I could do nothing about all the rain he have got over the last 2 months. in October we got 8 inches of rain then in nov we got 5 inches and it never rains in November. I wish now I did not plant it in the ground I should of kept it in the container.it was looking a little rough but I thought it was do the winter coming on. then Monday I went to cut one of the dead leaves and the whole stem fell off.so I dug it up and the corm was full of rot I cleaned all the black mush off it dipped it in a bleach and water mix to kill some of the mold from rot and now the corm is the size of a small apple, so for those who pray, please keep my plant in your prayers. I thank you very much in advance for your help. This plant is just not a plant to me it has a very special meaning to me, and if it dies a part of me will also it really means the world to me ,so if anyone might know of something I could do to try and help the corm recover I would really appreciate any help at all. alot of you know why this is a special plant to me so if it don't make it will be a very blue Christmas for me.....
I'm sorry to hear about your plant kub . You know you are in the on the list I will add the plant as well.
The star fruit was a huge hit on my thanksgiving table everyone sends there thanks as do I.

Very sad day today ...
Kubali,
My condolences. Somewhere on bananas.org years ago pitangadiego (http://www.bananas.org/member-pitangadiego.html) talks about his Ae Ae that up and died for no apparent reason overnight. I had seen this plant in his yard maybe two weeks prior. The plant was in great shape and Jon is a skilled horticulturist. So you should feel no shame in the loss of your plant. It is a stickler for cultural conditions and even then, it appears that the systemic disorder that causes its variegation also causes occasional untimely demise.
I have one arriving soon and could use some growing advice , do they like full sun ?
In our environment: filtered sunlight.

Saw a nice healthy mat just three hours south of you....in full sun.
And a nice healthy eight ft plant 900 miles to the north ......in part sun and cfl's.

What also I have found out about Ae Ae is the more variegated, the less hardy to cold, and harder to grow

There are different strains of Ae Ae. The Ae Ae I grow is the more resistant strain. Original source was the Miami Rare Fruit Council International – RFCI | Tropical Fruit ...tropicalfruitnews.org/
It must still be protected from cold. This is when you water very sparingly.
It's a chimera - give it a break!

Here is a similar plant .....in question....mine. The Cincinnanni..:p
I took this pic from a step ladder.
Tree ferns in the foreground.
I promise to abuse this plant to show the folks that this PLANT IS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER PLANT and to treat it as "just another heat sensitive tropical.
However I reserve the right to drag this not cool tolerant plant outside to disillusion you that this plant is cool tolerant by taking photos that will make you think that you can do it also......not. This plant for me stops thriving at 70f.
12 foot ceilings in basement are shown to show height... there are 90 plants in the background........pretty much in misery .
This plant out grew my not cool tolerant Viente Cohol by 3x ....in one season.....but they are diff plants... Hmmm. But both plants are robust
This plant has a7ft stem 12 ft spread and is a few years old.
Multiple pups ......none viable yet.
Recent inspection of corm area reveals no baby bumps .
These plants in cooler climates(mine) seem to not pup freely...like some of my other banana plants.
Here is a pic of the peeper PR was asking about today.....no heat.... no growth

Dan,are you serious? I thought the vigorous strain was the one the I gave to Nanaman and he gave to you...which I know I have again when I went to your home to get the same strain I had...lol! I am confused. If you have an even more vigorous strain from the Fruit Council, then I will be paying you a visit real soon!!! Lol! :woohoonaner::2787:!:2750::2750:
Is the other one just more resistant to the cold than vigorous,in your opinion?

I'm waiting for it!
A'e A'e is an interesting plant for sure, but hearing about its bad behaviour on cold temps, has been a letdown for me.
However I believe that unless this plant is proven more cold tolerant than Veinte Cohol, I can't grow it for lack of space.

From what I've seen A'e A'e is more cool tolerant than Veinte Cohol, which is not tolerant of cool at all. But VC is a fast-cycle variety, so if you have several months of tropical-like conditions, you might get fruit. A'e A'e is not a fast cycle variety.

I'm growing 4 different strains, 1 is too recent to assess, but out of the others Dan's strain would rank #3 for vigor, so it's probably more resistant to the cold.

5...Sunfishes strain...:lurk:
This is funny:08: but in all seriousness,I have grown like many of us,different "strains" of plants.Maybe after years, genetics of one strain weaken and some are able to keep vigor.Yes,they are all the same
musa, but I can confirm, some are stronger -jnstropic(Jordan)has had his for over 30 years...I grew one of his Ae Ae for years(great Ae Ae) but it displayed different behaviors than others i grew. So,something is going on:lurk

I traded a "Florida" strain from Thailand for one of Tony's ("Sunfishes strain") so we can grow each of them next to each other to see if they are really different. So far the only difference I have noticed is that the "Florida" strain tends to have a bit more consistent white and grey, but that could just be random luck so far. I think the "Floridas" got their name from the Thai's introducing a'ea'e from Florida to Thailand and then back to the states. We'll see.

Thats awesome that you can compare plants from two differnt sources.
I hope to get a couple more potted up so I may put them through the rigors of overwintering in the basement and to moniter the leaf color.
