Im going to have to break my rules and ask about something besides a banana. I have an avocado that has been in the ground for 5 years the trunk is 6" and is at least 18 feet tall. It did not bloom at all last year and this year it had a million blossoms. not a single flower set while I also had other varieties of avacados blooming at the same time. What is the problem? The tree is really big, I need fruit or I will cut the tree down. What do I need to do to get fruit from the tree? I live in Daytona Beach and my soil is 3 feet of topsoil then 6 feet of sand and then shell and water. I have some smaller Haas variety trees that bear what do I need to do to this tree??? Thanks so much in advance for any help.

Rick, I wouldn't give up hope this early on. Only a very small percentage of blooms usually hold. Give it a while and take another look. You may get a small yield since it's the first bloom, but I was hopefully you get something.

I had a similar experience with a tree about 20 feet tall. It bloomed hard but all of the blossoms within view later fell off. About 3 months later I could see a couple of fruit up in the tree.

I had an avocado tree in Hawaii that took 14 years to fruit; it produced the best avos I've ever tasted. Don't give up.

Rick - is this a seedling? or a grafted variety?

I also have 3 other avocado trees that are only 3 years old and they are all setting fruit. It is just my old tree that is not doing anything.

My big tree is a grafted florida variety avocado tree that I got at lowes and has bloomed every year except for last year, this year it just bloomed like mad. I will just keep the faith and wait.
