Hi Folks,

I got some musa basjoo last year and they came through winter like champs, I'm really enjoying them. This spring I got some Mekong Giant plants and will be putting them in the ground soon. From what I read the Mekong spread by long runners off the corm. I'm wondering if these can be destructive like bamboo?
I have some bamboo that caused some trouble with the driveway and I had to install a barrier. Are bananas capable of this kind of mischief?
I have a good place for them away from anything, just curious.

Thanks
Dave

Not unless you plant an Orinoco right next to it.. and then I don't think it would.. but you never know.. :^)

I have a couple of places I'm going to put some bananas this spring and one is right by a corner of the house. I think I'll go with a basjoo there

Thanks

I grew some Mekong giants last year, the runners they sent out aren't too invasive for a young plant. they sent out about 3 runners each. When dug up they look similar to what a daikon radish looks like but super long lol. I did read somewhere that once they establish themselves (in several seasons) the runners can get massive about the diameter of an arm, and can travel 6 feet away from the mother plant!
