I have some weird cricket / locust type bugs eating my Lily plant. I don't know what to do. There seem to be hundreds of them. Any suggestions?

Those insects really look a lot like young nymphs of Romalea microptera the eastern lubber grasshopper. When mature they often have bright colored stripes, short wings, huge, clumsy, and nothing eats the adults. They come in two basic phases with the black phase more common where I live. There have been some changes in nomenclature. See Species Romalea microptera - Eastern Lubber Grasshopper - BugGuide.Net (http://bugguide.net/node/view/2807)
Typically found adjacent to wetlands when mature. I have seen large numbers of the young on a single plant. It certainly could be something else also.

I have dogs. Should I worry about using orthene?

A lot of what bug guide says aligns with my location and what they look like. I have to say I don't want to disturb them and be subjected to smelly excretions!

From a short distance the smell is not normally that bad at least for the adults. Do not handle them or hold them close to the your nose. They are not like some walking sticks that will spray your face and eyes. It basically makes them noxious to bird and other things that might eat them. In the past I captured 1,000's of them for a project I was doing.

I went on a smashing rampage using a couple of bricks and took out a lot of them. It was REALLY disgusting. I found a couple of pages online that recommended nolo bait as a treatment but haven't been able to find it anywhere locally. I think I will just keep smashing as I work up the nerves until I can order some online.
