After looking at some of the pictures and reading some posts here, I decided to transplant my pups into containers of their own. I wasn't sure what to do with them.

Did you already transplant? What are you asking?

Make sure you get the whole pup.. I loosen soil and make sure the bottom doesn't come off.. Short roots are better than no roots.. Well once you put them in pots you have time to think about what your going to do w/ them.. :^)

Hammocked Banana, no I have not yet transplanted. I guess my question is, does anyone have advice for transplanting pups?

I should have pointed out that the main plant was nearly destroyed by my goats a couple of years back and it hasn't looked good since. Now there are a few pups and I thought it best to pull them out and nurture them in their own pot.

Good thing you have goats and not pigs, cause pigs would've rooted the corm out of the ground and ate that too.. A pot sounds like a better place to be.. Best of luck to you.. :^)

If you're leaving the rest of the mat in the ground and just removing the pups just make sure you get as much corm on them as possible, since these are what matter. Don't worry about being a little rough on the moms, just chop in there with a sharp showel/pry bar or whatever you want to use and cut the corm at an angle TOWARDS the mothers corm. Loosen the soil all around the pup and make sure its not still connected anywhere. I sometimes put my hand in the soil under the pup to help bring it up a little more gently with some extra roots. Also cut off all the leaves on the pup you are digging up except for the newest cigar leaf (and maybe one more if you had lots of roots). With spring here and the plants naturally starting to get more vigorous this is a good time to transplant, just be careful not to overwater before they start growing again, it should take about a month.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate the comments. I will be very careful and take some before and after photos.
