Aloha Kakou,
I stumbled onto this site while looking for some help for newly planted Bananas.
I am living in WINDY WET North Kohala on the Island of HAWAI'I (the big island).
I currently have 11varieties in the ground and my first flower showed up this week on my Dwarf Apple that was planted in January 2013.
We have an acre and a half that before we moved in had only grass so we have been very busy planting and trying to figure out ways to work around our WIND problem till the wind break plants and trees can grow.
Right now the fruit that I have in the ground is
DWARF Apple, Cuban Red, Dwarf Namwah, Tall Apple, Dwarf Red, Silk Fig, Thai, Ice Cream, Double Mahoi, Stout, and Hua Moa.
Kumquat, Pink and White Grapefruit, Tangelo, Variegated Lemon, Mexican Lime, Loquat, Longan, Strawberry Papaya, Ohelo, Dragon Fruit, White and Gold Pineapples, and Lilikoi (passion fruit) and one dessert Pink Guava.
The list of flowering and shade trees is getting just as long :-)
I look forward to learning from this group.
MAHALO,
Nancy :0517:

You might want to connect with Bradley at Aikane Nursery in Hawi. Coconut Chris who used to be active on here is also out there. Both good sources for many other types of bananas.

Good luck with all the plants, that is a great variety to feed your family with non toxic food. Drove through Hawi a few years ago and really liked that area, I could get used to that rural lifestyle. Went to the end of the road and hiked a little in the rain. While driving I had rain hitting my car but there were no clouds for several miles. I was in full sunshine and the clouds looked to be 5 miles away. That windy channel can be nasty, as you can see by my name I am usually across the channel when I am lucky enough to be in the islands.
