I suspect growing tobacco is a lot like growing sugar cane--you have to know how to process it and have the means to do so. No, I'm not growing any. Report back!

What are you growing wrapper, binder, or filler.

CT. can grow some fine wrappers.

For filler my heart is in Nicaragua.

"What are the various parts of a cigar? Many seasoned smokers enjoy their cigars without ever learning the basic parts of the cigar. While it may be true that you can savor a cigar without knowing how it was assembled, ascertaining the basic parts of a cigar can be helpful in assisting you in choosing the best caliber cigars.

The initial thing many smokers observe about a cigar is the wrapper, the layer of tobacco on the exterior of a cigar. A cigar's wrapper is very important because it provides much of the flavor of the cigar. The highest quality tobacco leaves are used to construct the wrapper. They range in color from very clear (claro) to very dark (oscuro).

Binders are known as the 'intermediate leaves.' They are used to hold or 'bind' the tobacco filler together. Binders can deviate considerably.

Lastly, the filler used to make a cigar. The filler is the actual tobacco. Generally, filler can be either long or short. Long filler consists of whole tobacco leaves, while short filler consists of smaller pieces or scraps.

Now that you know the parts of a cigar, you can make an informed decision."

This plant is an awesome filler plant, great wide leaves, slight aroma, good height, very tropical.

Across the river in Kentucky there are endless fields of this (with cannibis intermixed).
This plant creates millions of seeds.

Makes a great insect tea.

Tobacco water - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tobacco_water)

Tobacco can be a good natural insecticide, see link above. I have tried to grow it last year from seeds I had received from Bob3, but the darn squirrels ate the plants before I ever had a chance to harvest any.

I hear dat...that's who also was kind enough to send me my seeds also, thanks again Bob3..

Never thought about the squirrels getting to them, I trapped and released one just yesterday just to keep them out of my bird feeder hummmm, may have to use another squirrel catching method and cook a jambalaya instead:}

I tried planting a tray but none sprouted. My cousin has a bunch of seedling plant though. He said to cover the tray with plastic to keep the seeds warm and moist.

I quit smoking many years ago so I've never grown it. But I know a lady who grows it and sells the seeds on Local Harvest. Apparently .gov gets heavily involved if you sell tobacco but not the seeds. If I was a smoker I'd grow my own.

I'll be starting some seedlings here in the next couple of days. I'll probably only be able to grow 2-3 of them due to space constraints, but I'll let everyone know how they go. Not really a tobacco fan myself, but can't hurt to learn a new skill and maybe I'll find a friend who will appreciate the donation.
